Electric Drive Conversion Empty Electric Drive Conversion

Post by martinwinlow Sun Oct 02, 2016 12:41 pm

Hi All,

I joined this forum ages ago, when I first bought my HiJet van (2004).  I have not contributed much since (well, nothing, actually) and having lost my fab HiJet during the riots in 2011 (courtesy of a looter) I have not had any more to do with them.  My circs have changed and I am looking for one again but a 4x4, this time.

My reason for this posting is to share with the forum the electric drive conversion I did on my 2001 van.  Having recovered all the, still working - electric drive bits (£10k worth, new!) off the crashed van, they have been sitting around in my garage ever since, gathering much dust.  It seems a shame to waste them so I want to give them a new home but in a vehicle suitable for my next stage of life... building a house on an island off the west cost of Scotland (I'm currently in E Herts).

So, if anyone has a reasonably new (because I'll want to thoroughly Waxoyl the vehicle prior to salty-island-air deployment) 4x4 HiJet/Porter - ideally a pick-up - even more ideally with a blown engine -  please let me know.

Here is a couple of links to 2 web sites detailing the conversion....

... and one picture during the conversion...

I hope it interests at least someone out there...!  MW

Very interesting, would like to see more - but your second link doesn't appear to work.

Interesting indeed, if you're planning on going to a Scottish island, Arran already has ev charging stations Smile

The 58 plate Porter Electric Pick up I bought down in Wales, from a Forum member. He took all the electrical gear off the Pickup and transferred it all into his van.

He lived outside Swansea and wanted it for a cheap commute from Home each day. He put it on massive 17" wheels and it made it so overgeared that it really struggled up the Welsh hills.
He ended up dropping it down to 13" wheels and it was a lot better. Reckoned it cost him about 10p a day to go to work and back. Can't remember what top wack it had.

I literally only bought it  because it had two perfect Headlights. Being LHD the "Passenger Seat"  was mint condition, the steering wheel was in excellent nick and front bumper and a 1200 Diesel  engine in the back which made £250. Suspension and back axle all good so an all round better deal than expected.

The owner had  put all the Electric  Running gear in an N reg  Diesel Van and afterwards regretted  having gone to all the trouble.
