Day van conversion

Just stumbled across the forum - I'm looking at getting a hijet to use as my transport to work (when its too cold to take the bike!) and then doing some sort of conversion on it to turn it into a day van/camper for trips out with the family.

I'm off to look at a cheap lpg van and was wondering whether I can just swap the side slide doors in from the mpv version? I've seen some camper conversions where windows have been put in but figure that I could probably get hold of some doors cheaper. I'd also want to fit the rear bench seat in too - do the mountings for these still exist in the van or would some sort of fabrication be needed?

I can't see no reason why the doors wouldn't swap over.

The sliding door windows wind up and down too, which is nice.

Seat wise, not sure, others here have done it, bet they were all the same floor in the back.

that was kinda the route i was looking at too for installing windows as i thought two doors, or maybe even just the one would be cheaper than a window kit.
im still looking for a decent van, been to see three now - one i didnt even knock on the door as it was just rust, a second overheated as i was stood talking to the guy (good tip whoever it was mentioned that) and the third turned out to be rotten underneath.

Probably cos you're safer on a bike than a Hijet in a head-on collision....

Can't see any reason the doors won't fit either, kinda thought about it for mine, esp passenger side, it'd improve vision a lot too.

Be sure and take it for a long run, check it keeps it's cool, Hijets are prone to h/gasket failure.
They're great fun, esp in the snow




Remember not to make any permanant fixtures in the back, there's little enough room to get a bike in (but most of us have )

Having spent the last 12 months rebuilding the bike its making me sad taking it out in this weather! I also need a new project to keep me busy in the garage.

Just the two seats to go in the back, been looking at something on runners that can slide back and also be taken out. Can you get a ply lining kit for the hijet or is it easy enough to knock one up and stick some carpet on?

I have seen a ply kit but it was not cheap I think you could buy a jig saw and finish what you get cut at Wickes for less and then go to carpet right and get some nice shag pile to make it cozy.

There Is a suzuki camper near me went past it today and it's up for sale bit of rust few dents on a M reg and the asking price is £2500 which although it has gas and fridge and such I think is at least £1000 over priced. And I have checked it is not on google street or bird view

Well...I've done some more research.

Been looking at Subaru Sambars on fleabay - its amazing the asking prices for some of them but they do look funky. Think I'll use these as inspiration for converting a hijet.

Got sooo many ideas - just hope my ability matches up when it comes to the work needed.

When fitting a rear seat are there seat belt anchor points on the van already?

I really need to make sure I can fit rear seats and minimal cost - while making sure they are safe and have 3 point seat belts.
