993 Brake master cylinder location
Had van in for the brake issue, thinking it was going to be worn pads.. pads were in fact ok. its the Master cylinder buggered.
just had a look at the manuals.. & they dont have a section on the brakes!
i need to replace the M/C & trying to work out where the sod resides.. will i need to get the dash off to get to it or not.
garage have said that its best to replace it than get a seal kit, parts probably work beyond repair...

It's under the steering wheel, to the right of the steering column.
Not sure how much dismantling is needed to remove it though.

Re: 993 Brake master cylinder location
The Porter 1.3 16v manual shows the master cylinder. I've always been suspicious about s/h brake hydraulics and not wanted to take the risk. Might be worth a call to Womoco and see if they do a seal kit for it.

Re: 993 Brake master cylinder location
Woodford motor co are no longer a Daihatsu dealer they are now Suberu whether thay have parts or can get still I have no idea.
Re: 993 Brake master cylinder location
Well, I guess no-one is now as Daihatsu's aren't imported anymore. Womoco still do parts though - I had a wheel cylinder from them (£OUCH) last year. I wonder if there's an easy way of getting parts through a Piaggio dealer in Italy?

Re: 993 Brake master cylinder location
AFAIK Daihatsu don't do a seal kit, i priced a master cylinder when my brakes were buggered, luckily i had a spare pair of pants.....
The master cyl/ servo unit is a bit of a bugger to get to but you don't need to remove the dash.

Re: 993 Brake master cylinder location
Firstly I Don't know jack!!!!!
Dervs don't have a vacuum source the same as a petrol, they use a vacuum pump driven off the crank somewhere.
Where petrols pull from the inlet manifold.
Not sure if this effects the diaphragm size/fitment on a hijet???
More of a heads up for what to check!
As for seal kits, often you can take the thing apart and just replace the seals for generic parts from a good engineering supplies.

Re: 993 Brake master cylinder location
surely the braking systems would be the same between the vans of same age?
been told not to get a seal kit as wont last as long.. but nor will a 2nd hand M/Cylinder.

You just never know, you pays your money and take your chances.
But as you have to take your van off the road when you take the old one off, if your rebuild fails then your hunting for another one anyway.
Out of interest why do you think its the master cylinder? Does the pedal sometimes go straight to the floor with no resistance?
Re: 993 Brake master cylinder location
Garage who I asked to check pads/bleed/etc said it was as peddle travels too far. They know that I do work on it & get my own parts so havnt quoted for it.
Basically I press peddle almost to floor before anything happens & maybe stop! I have to use engine braking 100% of the time.

Think (95% sure) the 1.3 and 1l master cylinders are different.

Re: 993 Brake master cylinder location
Sure you ain't got an air pocket in the system somewhere?
Or the back drums adjusters are setup wrong?
You can do a pressure test on the master cylinder if you lay your hands on a gauge kit.

Re: 993 Brake master cylinder location
garage bled the system, checked the pads. brake still no better; they then checked the master cylinder & said this was the cause.
I have emailed several "van breaking" ebay sellers, posted on here, done 2 "part finder" type sites.. and no one has got anything of use. Dealers want £190 which i cant afford. cant find any seal kits for the van.
now looks like the end of Hovis! MOT expires 25th Feb. will be taken off the road until i can find something, if nothing in a month. Hovis will have to go.

Re: 993 Brake master cylinder location
What about this one? Probably still too expensive and the year might not be right so you will need to check with them. (Might also need to specify RHD just in case).

Works out at £149.67 + €19.95 delivery. (Don't know what that is but I think £1= €1.1987).

Re: 993 Brake master cylinder location
emailed norfolk breakers.
in the 2nd link E136.30 if you click on the "bus" it gives you a drop down menu to expand details.
now i am sure my van is 998cc.... instead of a 993cc.. (those few cc count ya know!)
dont see anywhere showing same as 1.3...? unless its the same part number?

Re: 993 Brake master cylinder location
If you click on 'Piaggio' it lists only 993cc as well, which is all that is mentioned in the Owner's Handbook and the Workshop Manual. So, I would assume from that the 1.3 master cylinder might be different in some way.

Re: 993 Brake master cylinder location
I was searching for a bit today amongst my junk and I came across a Master cylinder - Bendix 60317. Not sure if it came from a 1.3 or a 1.0 though. I currently have a Bosch one also from a 1.3 which I plan to use. I think I got the Bendix one when I was having brake problems before and must have forgot about it.
Its yours for £15 if its any use to you.
If you can take a decent pic of yours I could compare it externally at least.
