Solar or alternator split charge? Empty Solar or alternator split charge?

Post by Raggy Fri Dec 18, 2015 7:35 pm

Yet another dark night thought, browsing the bay I have seen 10w Solar flexible panels and split charge units to power small accesories etc and charge leisure battery. Anyone done this on their van/camper? Just wondered if its a better option than putting a normal split charge system in ( half the cost). Not got either at the moment, (the existing one I wouldnt trust), so could get a normal system (not sure of alternator output) or just leave it for moment and save up for a solar panel system and add that later. Just looking for opinions and ideas really to pass the dark nights. Plenty of other jobs to get on with but as I need to redo the rear seating/bed area it would be an ideal time to do it then I'm only drilling holes and mounting stuff while everything is clear.
Not looking to run much from battery, charge phone, play music, run some lights etc maybe laptop/ipad.

Yes. 120w solar on the roofrack with a cheapo 10amp pwm controller and seperate leisure battery. Don't bother with the 10w panel - too small and likely to be overpriced.

Check out bimble solar for good deals on second hand panels - usually harvested (ha!) from solar farms when they upgrade.  My panel cost me 53 quid, a tenner for the controller and another tenner for some halfway decent cable, fuses, etc.,  to string it all together.

Brill answer, will have a look.
(Sorry my typo, should have said 100w not 10w!)
