Low tick over and die when cold.. Empty Low tick over and die when cold..

Post by dripa Mon Jul 22, 2013 1:34 pm

Hi
My 2004 Hijet 1300 EFI dual fuel to me seems to have a low tick over.
It starts ok and while the auto choke (or whatever it is in an EFI ) keeps the engine running. But after 5 minutes and before it has reached operating temperature if I put my foot on the clutch it will just die..
Now back in the days of carburettor there was little tick over jet which you could wind up..
Is there such an adjustment on my Hijet ???

Thanks in advance....

Paul

I would suspect the spark plugs -- check they are ok and properly tightened.

I failed to tighten the plugs properly once and every time I pressed the clutch the engine stopped. Unfortunately, before I knew what was wrong it blew a spark plug out, destroying the thread. The resulting expense of getting the head rethreaded has meant I no longer go anywhere near spark plugs for the safety of my bank balance!

Look under the drivers seat next to where the intake pipe is connected to the throttle body. Just near the alternator.

Put a hex key in an adjust away. I think anticlockwise will increase the idle speed.

I gave it a half turn anticlockwise but didn't notice a lot of difference.
I'll take her for a run tonight to fully warm up then give another quarter turn more and see..

Fingers crossed Paul

Idle speed should always be done at normal operating temperature as the cold fuel system will override it anyway at cold.

Hi,

I fine tuned the tick over with the engine hot and that seems fine now....
However she still dies before it gets hot..
She starts fine, has a nice high tick over while cold but as soon as the temp gauge gets to about a quater the choke (or whatever it is on EFI engines) goes in and as the engine is not at normal temp she dies.
So I guess now I'm looking for an adjuctment to the choke....

I think maybe your fast idle control valve might be faulty.

It works by having a feed from the coolant system, which mechanically opens a valve depending on the temperature of the water. It uses a wax or bimetal strip or something inside.

Maybe it doesn't work very well.

It is near the throttle body on the inlet manifold.

Hi HJ,

Thanks for such a quick reply...

It sounds a bit deep so as it's not a major issue I'll live with it for a while....
I still have fuel sender and wipers to replace to get her ship shape.

Thanks again for you advice..

Cheers Paul
