Re: Steering Wheeling
Nicely done Sir, that certainly wont bend or let you down, nor should it warp when you weld it to the original boss.
And judging by the pictures your workshop is beautiful, nicely organised and clean. Damn nice tap'n'die set too.
Cant wait to see the next stage.

Re: Steering Wheeling
The next stage
Got the van back, old wheel off, hacksaw time
Then it's burnin off the plastic
NO PICCY (burned my b!**&y finger )
As i have no Argon for the TiG i drilled a couple of holes and tapped them so i could trial mount it
Loads more clearance now
I reckon i'll use the stick welder to finish it tomorrow, can't justify a bottle of Argon just now.
Glad you liked my wee shed, it's a work in progress when i'm not doing the house(or in plaster........)

Re: Steering Wheeling
That is a beautiful workspace, really quite envious. Hope your finger isn't to bad, just a bit shiny hopefully not a blistered pussy mess. Nice TTR, which engine size is it? I love on road off road bikes, nice and light to move about and they still get you too the bank/shops on a snowy day. There seems to be a hijet/biker coincidence thing going on, bit like robin reliants back in the day
That little lathe is a handy thing, i've got the clarke combi miller/lathe but the miller is shocking, the hight adjustable head moves under load - which makes me very angry mid cut - so much so i've given up on trying to mill on it.
But anyway, so now your van is in this sort of steering wheel-less stage I guess! Drive it on mold grips.
Do you think you'll be able to keep the horn conductor ring in place and working?
Good luck, Matt

Re: Steering Wheeling
Melting steering wheel running onto my finger, not pleasant.
The TTR is a 250, i've had it for nigh on 10 years, may be restored this winter, then again, may be the Hijet
The lathe is just that bit too small, i'm about 3mm over with the steel tube for the boss, i'd planned to taper it.
Can't drive it anyway just now, broken ankle Though it'll move with the wheel as is.
I'm hoping to re-use the horn ring, but i'm thinking of a seperate button if it doesn't work.
Another wee bit of bling arrived today, my mate was using it last week and bought me a cd/mp3 player for it

Re: Steering Wheeling
Urgh! Melted plastic on skin isn't fun. Tends to leave dirty scab/scar. Come on Mr Hazard, how did you break your ankle?
Where are you going to install this 'wee' head unit? I ditched my centre console in the name of leg room then bodged the radio elsewhere.
Someone else on here did a nice job of their head unit, it was large519 in the post called "my bad ass hijet" here's his radio picture :-

Re: Steering Wheeling
Yes, saw that but i have another plan for that area
It's going in the centre console, i've only got little feet
Found out that the HSE crap about falls from height at work being the most common cause of accidents at work is just that, crap.
I fell about 15 feet, no problems , it's the landing that's the problem........

Re: Steering Wheeling
ha!!! (I actually laughed out load but lol is so cheap nowadays) Ain't gravity a bitch. Hope you get that cast off asap, but then you'll get stuck back into working and we won't get hijet tinkering updates
Re: Steering Wheeling
I had a TTR250 as my only form of transport for about 4 years, brilliant bike.
I also took it for MOT in the back of the Hijet, which was a bit of a squeeze.
I wish I had that much space in my garage, I must stop buying crap off Ebay.

Re: Steering Wheeling
Tinkering aplenty yet, there's plans afoot for the Hijet
I love my TTR, excellent bike. I see you have a slow
green one as well........
Well, job done, welded the original boss on, was going to be neat but just covered it in tape for now.
Build up and insulated the bottom with the glue gun and set the horn ring in it. Insulated the wee tang that goes through the boss as without the plastic covering it'll earth and i'll be too horny... Made a connecter for the hornpush on the new wheel and Robert's your maternal sibling Works a treat.
Sorry, no pics as i'd left my phone indoors and as i'm kinda restricted mobility wise
The finished article
Another wee refinement
Sadly my CD player i got as a prezzie didn't work so no bling there yet

Have you snapped the key on your TTR yet by leaving it in the steering lock & turning the bars?
I did.
That steering wheel looks great & should feel a lot chunkier than the skinny plastic original.
P.S. Everybody knows that the green ones are faster!

Re: Steering Wheeling
I never use the steering lock, mostly cos i've only got one key.
The wheel's a cheap one, not great quality, but it looks the part

Re: Steering Wheeling
I'm jealous!!!!!!!!!!! I only have a little lathe that doesn't even have power feed.
HJ take smaller cuts on the mill if you don't want it I have a home that would love to keep it warm and oiled

Re: Steering Wheeling
I sold it about 3 weeks ago to a lad and his dad for about £700 via ebay.
Seriously, the miller was pointless, if I tried to do a thinner cut with it there wouldn't be a mark on the alloy. 100% forget steel.
Even just drilling with it the head would wander.
Get a proper one!
A good 40 year old Bridgeport or Tom Senior or etc. Fork lift her in to live with you forever. Get some quality bonding time on the go.

Re: Steering Wheeling
A wee update,
for anyone thinking of a blingy steering wheel off Ebay, some are shite, not been happy with mine as it's pretty flexible
Not too bad due to the flat angle on the'Jet but in a car it'd be bent by now. Basically you can wiggle the top bit!
So a new steery wheel is winging it's way to the 'Jet, it's the start of the Motstoration
