timing marks on flywheel
Question, im I right in saying that the yellow mark on the flywheel is the timing mark(3*btdc) and the pink/purple mark is TDC? If so the cam pulley mark F and the mark on the bottom crank gear should all line up with the pink/purple mark?

Mine doesn't have any colours. There is a little stamped arrow which lines up in the usual way on mine.

Re: timing marks on flywheel
But, do you know if this would line up with all the other timing marks on cam and crank cog ?

In theory they should, shouldn't they?

It does actually say in the engine manual, if you want a definitive answer.

Re: timing marks on flywheel
I did read something when rebuilding, about a yellow mark on the flywheel being the timing mark, but curious when I also found an indent coloured pink/purple about an inch away from it ? I obviously used the marks on the front of the engine when fitting a new belt.

Right you bunch of useless idiots. I really am getting fed up with playing Nursemaid to you all. And I had better get some thanks for this instead of keep helping members out and not getting any thanks for it. What ever is all this rubbish about Pink marks. Pink Fairies more like.
You had all better get on your knees and grovel.
I have been over to my old Workshop and found two badly rusted flywheels and got my drill out and cleaned the sides of both flywheels up and you can clearly see two drill marks. The engine turns clockwise from the front so looking at the flywheel from the back the smaller diameter drill hole is your firing mark. The Larger Drill mark is TDC. Line the smaller drill hole up with the firing mark underneath the rubber bung on the TOP of the Bellhousing and slacken the set-bolts on the Cam-Sensor and turn on the Ignition. Turn the Sensor (on the back of the Cylinder head (viewed from the back) ANTI-CLOCKWISE basically the same direction as the engine turns. With the SMALL DRILL MARK IN THE CORRECT PLACE turn the Cam Sensor CLOCKWISE - the opposite direction the engine turns. When the Camshaft Sensor reaches the 3° mark you should be able to hear a spark noise. Just nip up the Set Bolts and you will have got the firing spot perfectly. You can play around moving the Cam Sensor very gently to get the timing spot on TO SUIT YOUR ENGINE. They are all different - so I take it on the road and experiment with moving the CamSensor to give you the best acceleration. Once you are happy with that - tighten up the set bolts and put the gearbox cover back on. Job done.
The larger drill mark is for TDC when you are lining up the Cam Belt.
Right now all get on your knees and shout Hail Woody. I am going to send 2 or 3 photos through - AFTER THIS.

Re: timing marks on flywheel
Oh no!! I haven't got to go hunting again over the garage have I. That engine you picked up at the weekend have a good look at the flywheel and see what you can find. It's about 4 years since the 993cc I pulled to bits and I must admit that I can't remember. Flywheel is 5 bolt fitting isn't it?
I would imagine that they would be using the same method - but I HONESTLY can't remember Raggy. I hardly ever actually worked on the 993cc engines. All my work was on 1300's and desecration of them both for spares. Worked for me!! And the hundreds of Forum members that I have supplied with spares.

Honestly not had a look yet, when I get chance I will have a look, have the manual anyway. Will document the strip down and rebuild when I get around it it.

Re: timing marks on flywheel
Was more like purple!!! someone must have put some nail varnish on it when doing a previous job. It is all up and running, goes well upto 50-55ish, will it do more if I push it or is that about right 1.3 efi petrol. Gets to 50 fairly rapid!!!

Re: timing marks on flywheel
50-55? Switched over onto LPG (no rev limiter on LPG) mine will do 70mph in third gear. Last Friday I took a Forum member out in it and to say that he was gobsmacked - would be an understatement. On Petrol it the rev limitter cuts the fuel supply at 62mph. So a big difference between the two fuels.
Perhaps you should try some Grecian 2000 IN THE PETROL TANK RATHER THAN ON YOUR HAIR.

Re: timing marks on flywheel
Hello Hijetters. I have a question on this topic. I lined up the small hole in the flywheel with the firing mark. Turned on the ignition. I then turned around the camshaft position sensor as described, but I do not hear any sparkly sound. When starting the engine it does react om turning the camshaft position sensor. But why would it not spark on turning the CPS? Thanks a lot!
