Sorry 602. Forgot to reply to your request for info. The Mk5 Romahome body with all the accessories weighed in at 6.5cwt (330kg) and the earlier bodies with the square windows Mk 1/2 just under 6cwt and the Mk3/4 were just a tad over 6cwt.
I have got a Mk5 body on a Pickup at my yard. I have transferred it 3 times now on my own by parking another Pickup alongside and a couple of lengths of wood have picked the body up and slid it on the wood onto the other Pickup. I can pick it up from the back and lift it and lifting from either side is a piece of cake.
But I am bit of a Gorilla.
A Hi-Jet Pickup is approximately 15cwt from the very sparse information I have been able to find in the past and that would include the 3 drop down sides don't forget.
There is information in the Hi-Jet Handbooks about the vehicle weight which it states as 1550lbs although just checked again and that is for the Van. Nothing listed for either Pick-Up.

This is one of the memento's left over from my Romahome glory days. I called in to the new premises on Monday to see Adam and Brian, and Adams side of the business building MPV Conversions to Motor Homes is doing better than Brian's New Romahome sales. It sadly has slid down hill. They are back in the building where they originally built almost 4,000 Green and Yellow checkered Pick-Ups for the AA in the mid to late 90's. The building is about a fifth of the size of the newly formed Romahome I joined in 2002.

Well I have for the past two hours, and indeed I still am listening with my headphones (other than a live group - no finer way) to my 7 CD Boxed Set of Kraftwerk. Simplistic, but brilliant. Bit like me really.
1am and I have had a rare flash of inspiration. No longer 602 - - - but TOF!!! Its 3 letters instead of 3 numbers. Brilliant, got it at last and that is with only 80 minutes left on 8tracks left of 42 in total. Yep, TOF definitely. The Old Fart. Very endearing don't you think?? Rolling Eyes

Hi,

Some of you may have noticed my absence.

My SWMBO said (raised voice) she did not want me to have a Hijet, so I looked at other shopping trolleys, got some insurance quotes. My regular insurer wanted £390 for a Focus 1.4 Estate, £350 for a Renault 1.8 diesel Kangoo van. And £250 for a Daewoo 1.0 Matiz. I think I'm being punished for being born before WW2. Or maybe it was the £120 refund when I sold my Peugeot 306 1.9TDi Estate, for which they were charging me a little over £200 last year. I didn't dare ask for a quote for a Hijet, which would have been academic anyway.

SWMBO's next move was to point out (unraised voice) a SAAB 95 V4 Estate at £4995. Yep, I fancied that, but didn't like the "surface" rust, or the colour, or my perceived lack of club support.

So she worked her way through classiccarsforsale.co.uk, found a Morris 1000 woody estate, longish MOT, and VED exempt, at half the price of the SAAB ... and less than ten miles down the road. We did not allow the odometer reading 16,000 miles distract us, but an insurance quote of £52 (plus tax) put the icing on the cake. I let SWMBO do the haggling ... her offer of substantially less than the asking price was accepted.

I still hanker after a Hijet, but admit that I an happier with an engine and transmission that I understand.

So, thank you everybody for your welcome, help and advice, and I will take my leave ... though I may drop in from time to time.

Amazing the effects women have in our lives - - and not necessarily for the good. Trouble is at 78 John it's bit late to be thinking of divorce eh??
I hope that the Moggy Minor turns out to suit your needs. I always think that they are the ultimate Street Sleeper with that totally uncluttered square engine bay that was originally designed in 1948 to fit a flat four boxer engine in, certainly lends itself to a nice big V6 or V8 transplant.

It was a hideous monstrosity cooked up by BMC in 1947, but turned out to be unreliable and very thirsty. So at the last minute they substituted it with the old Morris 8 803cc Side Valve lump knocked out to 918cc producing 27 bhp!! Then in 1952 they replaced it with an 803cc OHV engine producing 30bhp. In 1956 it got a 948cc engine and 37bhp and finally in 1962 a 1098cc OHV engine giving 48 bhp. My gosh. Weren't they spoilt.

I have had quite a number of Alfa's. The Twin Cam 1600cc 1800cc and 2000cc and 1500 and Cloverleaf 1700 Boxers. I was going to fit the 1700 engine into the back of a Skoda Rapid but it was too complicated with the Electronics. So I put an 1800 Twin Cam in instead. It was wild. Great fun. I still have the Engine and the adaptor kit prototype I made up.

Paul Emery was THE Man for tuning Hillman Imps. He died at the end of last year. He built the engines up to 1300cc from the original 875cc. A Full Race imp produced around 125 bhp on twin DCOE40's and on the Saloon Car Track were pretty near unasaleable. Incredible handling little shopping trolleys.

I agree. If we had found an acceptably priced Husky or Cob, we might have been tempted. But as with most lesser classics, what you couldn't give away a couple of years ago are now asking silly money. Circa £1,000 for a 2CV or Herald ... and that is for a PROJECT.

No doubt Hijets day will come.

Actually, SWMBO offered £2K, which was accepted. Not perfect, but seems an honest car. I can't think of anything (yet) that needs fixing, though I suspect the tyres are maybe older than I'd like ... slight cracking, but it has a longish MOT. I will discuss dropping wheels from 14" to 13" (A30, A35, MG Midget, Reliant Regal, etc) with my insurers, as tyres are cheaper, and a much wider choice.

This is the Moggy Minor that John has bought. Certainly a Classic marque. Not my cup of tea. Worst job I have ever had to do on one is the Brake Master Cylinder. It is buried in the chassis channel with two bolts going through it. Any water on your shoes runs down the brake pedal and ends up in the chassis channel and rusts the bolts. Not the best of designs. Then again it was a BMC, so no surprise there.

Yeah, that crossed my mind some hours after the deal was done. As it shares this idea with Land Rover Series Ones, and there is plenty still in the budget, I'm prepared to live with it. Long term solution is to sleeve the master cylinder with stainless, after which it will live for ever.

Anyway ... a bad idea that works is better than a good idea that doesn't.

As long as you use Stainless bolts as well to hold it in place too and loads of grease. Sorry to be morose, but it would certainly outlast you, modified that way.

and those 1.3 hces engines were put in many many other vehicles because it was a big success (not)

just look at half of this forum
its all about the joys of owning one over here.

in no time you will be a coolingsystem expert and know how to make an overide switch for your coolingfan.
nervously watching your tempgauge constantly keeps you awake and sharp.
and pay a lot of money for difficult to get and waaayyy overpriced parts like an exhaust or headlights.
things like nice alloy wheels are realy easy to find to in 4x110.
its going to be awesome
