Newbie Mrs Doyle 2000 Highjet 1.3 16V EFI 6 seater
Hi,
Massive thanks to this forum for saving my wee van from a near death experience yesterday.
Short story, broke down, RAC, two hrs later hubby and RAC guy didn't want the issue to beat them, just about to give in and I presented them with the topic on battery wire breakage...both shook their heads, signed off the paperwork and hubby got to fixing the problem, Mrs Doyle resuscitated...Result!
Bought our 2000 highjet about a year ago with the intention of converting to a glamper and basically used it as a cart horse while renovating and dump runs. House more or less finished so flipped a coin to either complete the external of the house or take a break and start renovating Mrs Doyle, the Hijet...she won!
My parents always had some sort of mini van on the drive, Rascal, Hijet etc. I guess that's where my love for them came from. I acquired their last and final Hijet a 2001 rust bucket that got me fro Ireland to Wales with a loaded cargo but was a little touch and go. My new hubby was converted en route and loved the wee van. He came home from work one evening last year with a grin and a photo of a 2000 Hijet. Albeit a year older but she was in fair nick. Phoned and haggled a good price, tbh it was a steal, travelled four hours to view and brought her home. There were a few things wrong but we couldn't leave her. Lol
Having two now, my hubby convinced me that it was best to let the poorly rusted blue 01 go but we should strip the engine etc...he was a genius. All spares are neatly wrapped and tucked at the back of a shed.
So this week we have stripped the inside out in preparation for our camper. Hubby has tided underneath and wax oiled, all the blokey stuff. We've insulated where possible and I've recovered all interior panels with leatherette which I got for a bargain. We started to rub and fill body work and had intended to finish this weekend but as it's a bank holiday weekend as usual rain has stopped play. Typical.
I know what I have in mind won't please all but hope you like what we've done so far...

Starting to find my way around. So from here on, do picks have to go in the photo section? Trying to keep myself right
Anybody advice on roof racks?
Thanks.

Thanks for that info Logi. I'm gutted that we just got rid of a 92 Landrover Defender TDI 110 with the exact roof bar your talking about ...I now have to deal with the hubby saying, 'Told you to never get rid of stuff!' Ah well, such is life. Lol

Could have saved the wing mirrors too? Been looking at those as a possible replacement for mine.

Swarfig, I'm pretty lucky that the wing mirrors are good Had considered changing them but decided to keep as is.
Highlyjetted, all of the above I intend to do once the wee van is sorted...apart from kissing Logi of course!
Dry day so out to get as much prep for re spray, she's going in Thursday!! Doing this part has saved so much money and we've learnt quite a bit along the way. Perfected it now and found a good man who isn't too hard to pay for the spray job. Had considered spraying ourselves but some things should be left to those who know.
Going for a light cream colour (prob a girly thing ) TBH, I love the White but thought if we're gonna spray it, go for a little change.
Yesterday's work involved prepping bumpers. Hubby found that if he lightly heated the plastic on the bumper, most of the scratches and dinks came out, looks good as new now. Also acquired some stainless grill type sheets which have now been cut to replace old ones. Lesson of the day...wear gloves!!

Hubs? Suspect you mean metal hub-caps, as opposed to wheel trims. Mini's had them for 10" wheels, Minors for 14". Hillman Imp's had 12" inch wheels though, but doubt if the caps would be a straight fit.

Re: Newbie Mrs Doyle 2000 Highjet 1.3 16V EFI 6 seater
You are right PFM. The old Minis and Fords and Chrysler, Vauxhall etc had 3 or 4 mouldings pressed into the shape of the centre of the wheels which the Hub Caps snapped onto.
You had to get a screwdriver to prise them off with or sometimes the wheel spanner had a flat blade end to it to prise the cap off.
Unfortunately Hi-Jets don't have that facility to fit Hub Caps. Plastic hubcaps are the only option for steel rims.

Hi, thanks for the info guys. Helps to put my brain at rest. It's getting a little addictive this. Lol. I guess the only option is to make something fit or put up and **** up...Yep, guess the hubbers would prefer the latter!

Moon Discs!! I haven't seen those since the 70's. Very popular with customizers.
You are a genius Logi.
How do you have time for a job and all the "research" you do?

Today and yesterday were very productive. Hubby fitted xenon headlights and day running lights...clever. Tow hitch re sprayed. I tackled the head liner. Patience was definitely called for!Front panel left to do. Using the cream leatherette. Not giving up!! Yet. Lol
