Dashboard Illumination Bulbs
Does any one know the size/code for the Hijet Bulbs that illuminate the Dash.
I want to swap them out for some brighter LED ones, but am unsure on the correct size?
Are they T5 Bulbs?

Yes mate they are T5 wedges. The picture shows them inside the bulb holder which you won't need to buy as you'll already have them in the back of the dash. I tried putting LEDs in yesterday and it hasn't made any difference to the brightness of the dash and the one I tried in the check engine light changed the colour from orange to a washed out yellow colour so I swapped it back to the conventional bulb.

hmmmm .... may need a rethink then, I was going to whip it out tomorrow too. Did you remove the green film at all, or just swap out to white LED's ?
I was thinking of removing the coloured film and adding blue LED's.

Re: Dashboard Illumination Bulbs
I just swapped them for white LEDs. Main reason for having the dash out was the engine light wasn't working. I had some T5 leds lay around so I thought I'd try them to hopefully help the poor illumination. If I had known about this green film you talk of I may have given blue LEDs a go myself

Re: Dashboard Illumination Bulbs
Well I removed the old bulbs and also took out the Green plastic covers over the three bulbs, and added three Blue LED's:

Although my dash is a nice blue, they are not that much brighter still, which has surprised me ??

There must be a reason why though, I have done this on other vehicles and seen a huge improvement?
Re: Dashboard Illumination Bulbs
Yeah and me. Ive read that people who have had their hijet from new or nearly new have said they used to be brighter so im guessing there maybe a reflective surface in the clocks somewhere which fades/ flakes off over time. But like i say thats just me guessing

Re: Dashboard Illumination Bulbs
The original bulbs are 1.2w. Yes, mine got dim after 18 years and, when replaced, weren't as bright as my newer vans but I can't see any reason for this unless the plastic through which they shine gets more opaque over time.

Re: Dashboard Illumination Bulbs
There is no reflective in the clocks just white plastic I used the stick on alloy tape as a reflector which helped then I put two bits of the led tape freebie in and now with the white dash I have a blue filter to dim them back down again.
Re: Dashboard Illumination Bulbs
The LED tape sounds like a good solution, might have to try that

Re: Dashboard Illumination Bulbs
The way I have it means that I can't see very well at night as the light now reflects off the steering coloum and gives a head up display where I want to look.
Re: Dashboard Illumination Bulbs
Ah, right. Maybe not then ha! Might get hold of a spare set of clocks to have a play with

Dim instrument panel lights
Had the same problem with my 1994 hijet instrument panel, used the stock bulbs, took off the green film covering the bulbs then enlarged the light opening slot on top of the display with a hacksaw...seems the original opening was way too small, so not enough light got through, it's alot brighter now. just my 10cents on the topic.
