993 engine swap
hi
great forum!!, just picked up a 1997 993 efi, with oil into the coolant, suspected cracked head, i have access to a 1.3 hi jet, and was wondering if it possible to change the engine into the 993? if anyone has done this swap did you change the gearbox and any other items? and is it possible without any major cutting. searched through threads but couldnt find alot
many thanks

Re: 993 engine swap
No cutting required for sure.
But you will need the full wiring loom, ecu, engine, gearbox, radiator, fan, coolant hoses.
maybe the dash clocks, not sure about the fuel pump, probably both the same.
I'd say it'd be a pretty easy swap, but you'll have to get all the dashboard out so swap the loom over.
Might need the prop shaft too as they might be a different length or flange fitment.
No one on here has done this swap, but it'd be pretty straight forward if you had the whole 1.3 van at hand.

Re: 993 engine swap
Final drive ratio in the diff is different too.
1300 = 4.444
993 = 4.875
So it'd make it accelerate faster than a normal 1.3 if you kept the 993 diff - but on the flip side it would cruise at a higher rpm on the motorway.

Re: 993 engine swap

Re: 993 engine swap
rotten, and panel damage beyond hi jet shape if you get me, 993 realy, clean,
just to change subject, sorry,
the temp gauge doesnt move a mm, do you no if it gets it pick up straight from the sender, (shorting the plug should make it raise) or from the ecu? or is there another test i can do? (just wanting to drive van for a few weeks till engine change)
cheers gav

Re: 993 engine swap
There is a combined gauge and fan sensor on the rear of the cylinder head on a 993cc engine.
It has 3 pins and a triangular shaped plug.
One pin goes straight to the gauge, another goes to the fan, and the other is a ground I think.

No there is not it is a single for the temp gauge and a two pin for the ECU on a 993cc and the clocks are nearly the same the 1.3 has a low fuel light and the 993 doesn't but I have a 1.3 fitted to our 993 just don't have a working low fuel so I would use all the later stuff in the earlier van.
