Hi and radio fitting

I have just picked up a nice 2001 red hijet with 66000 on the clock and 2 owners from new and am impressed.

I had a rascal a few years ago until it was written off and when my current fiesta van failed the MOT the hunt was on to find a rascal but found the hijet at the right price, i have changed the cam belt but the old one still looked like new

Now i want to fit my CD player i'm a bit reluctant to cut the Blank out of the dashboard just under the heater controls, as it looks like there is not enough room behind. Does anyone know the maximum distance allowed at the back of this blank ?
or any other solutions.

Also i need replacement outside handles for the sliding doors any one got any

Replacement outside handles aren't hard to get hold of, try www.usedhijetparts.co.uk.

The CD player won't fit in the slot for the old style radios as it is not deep enough. On mine, the previous owner cut a hole in the passenger side of the dashboard, but there are floor consoles available, which go in front of the gearstick, and I have seen pictures of a unit that sits on top of the dashboard.

mines in a centre console that come from the floar . not sure if its a standard bit but look proper , i can take a pic tomorrow if it helps

ps i got a sliding door handle off here for about a tenner

Yeah the cut out slot in the dash is only about 10cm deep so a standard head unit won't fit.

Sold all sliding door handles I had, both inside and out.

I think I'd prefer the "horrid" one, I like to stretch my legs a bit on long journeys, the centre one would get in the way!

Had look around for a centre console but they seam to be as hard to find as sliding door handles

mattyo could you mount it in the glove box ? iv done quit a few on classic car when i didn't want to chop the dash ,

or haw about mounting an amp somewhere and havering a jack lead to an ipod/3p3 player ?

One evening this weekend I am going to make a mould for my vacuum forming machine so I can make a radio holder which puts the radio in this place:-

Don't you guys have centre consoles

I have two centre consoles spare but they take up all your leg room and stop you from sliding over to the passenger seat when you have to park up against a hedge or wall or get some nookie.

Depends how the mould making goes, might need to alter my vacuum forming machine as I have a feeling its not wide enough at the moment.

Also I may need some kind of metal support bracket to hold the weight of the radio up as the plastic may crack under the load.

Big mission on! But I really need to get this done as I'm going mad driving my van now for about 3 months with no radio. The dog makes crap conversation.

I have the centre console, but find it a bit too low....
The pic of the console on top of the dash looks like it ready for a Taxi Meter install .

I don't find leg room a problem with a centre console, and can get my leg over (when parked against a wall). As for the other, if you have a look behind the 2 seats you will find there's plenty of space for that!

I like putting my left leg in the passenger footwell and not using the clutch as I'm a bit lazy after a hard days graft and I like to stretch out a bit.

The new seats in my van have made a huge difference to the comfort and seating position. They don't sag like the standard seats as they have a proper metal sub base and back, plus the sponge is of a much higher quality than the cheap shoddy hijet seats. The new steering wheel is really the icing on the cake, it feels like a totally different standard of build quality and comfort.

No time this weekend for playing! Trying to get a bathroom built so doing long hours. I will do this though as soon as the task is complete.

Plus, to call that guys radio pod horrid is a bit harsh really. I think its a good bit of metal work.

agree with the horrid comment i would be happy with that in my van and its far better than i could do.
