Dodgy brakes

Does anyone know if the brake pipes fittings on the vans are metric or imperial? Our LSPV has started leaking and I need to drive the van so want a tempory fitting so I can try and fix the valve or sorce another and Clare has just found that as of 31st January 2013 Diahatsu will no longer be imported.

I assume that it is a 10 x 1mm thread then?

I've been told by a Daihatsu dealer that parts are now coming in from Japan but will take about three weeks to arrive. As this is different to before I presume that it will continue in this fashion.

Yeah says on the website aftersales support will continue.

Strangely I have one off my van next to my monitor, so from measuring it with my rule (!) I conclude that it is a 1mm pitch and 10mm thread.

Ta have you had your LSPV apart yet I'm thinking of taking it apart insitu I expect that the piston and seal is held in with a circlip but don't know.

Yes, stripped mine couple of weeks back.

Under the rubber there are two circlips, one half way down, the other right against a metal collar. Remove them both.

Clean the inside of the visible bore because...

You pull the exposed piston rod thus withdrawing the whole collar and piston bit.

There is an odd flat rubber seal, and an O ring - that is all that seals in there.

cool I hope to re seal it just to get it working as off on hols in just under two weeks.

If its leaking and not from a pipe fitting there are only 2 seals it could be. Most likely the one on the right hand end of the shaft where the rusty bit is.

Ta it is not far off what I thought I would find and as it has been jammed since before we bought it I suspet the rusty bit aswell hopefully a clean up and a new o ring or two and I can seal it up, any way off to bed now as have to ride to work it's only 13 miles each way.

If you take the far left O ring off the shaft you get fully working brakes all the time

Thus it may look like a bias control valve as required by MOT, but works just like a T piece

Thats fine by me but mine is slightly different looking as the hanger for the arm is different also I can pull the piston pin out but the arm pushes so I am confused as to how it should work.

Ahh, well if you get someone to push on the brake pedal you will find it pushes the piston out, and depending on how much you push back on the arm depends on the brake distribution. That's my conclusion anyway right or wrong

That would make sense to me as it didn't need a lot to move it I could pull it out with my fingers.

I have removed the pin and bolted a seal into the hole and blead the brakes and I seem to have brake pressure so hopefully that will do for now as it's the main seal leaking on it.

Your hijet is a mid 1990's 3 cylinder from memory?

My valve on Ernie the 1.3 pickup is the same as my 1999 1.3 silver MPV.

Your look like it works under the same principle to mine though.

Yep ours is a 1995 mpv 993cc so I assume I have the 1lt setup and all the 1.3's are like yours.

I'm hopeing that the main seal is the same as something else it looks like a ford speedo drive seal but the hole is only 5mm.

I'm not big up on seals and o rings etc, but I'm under the impression that seals are normally pretty standard engineering components.

They have names for ones that are square in profile and the tapered ones, and the ones which are X in profile, and they are measured by their internal diameter and the thickness, and its something to do with ISO 3601 standards.

That's the extent of my seal knowledge

no such thing as a standard seal in engineering terms they are just the ones that loads of people order at work we use a few different o-rings that are common but we have several custom made Items I will be going through the suppliers catalouge to see if they make anything like what is needed.

But for the time being I don't think that the brakes have ever been as good on the jet as I used a small bolt and a rubber washer to seal off the main hole.

Just a little I recon that once the van is empty I will be able to get the rear wheels clear of the ground I think I have had them skipping on standard brakes doing an emergency stop when empty.
