Hijet Turbo
I am looking at a Charade 1.0l Turbo, wondering if I can graft the turbo etc onto the Hijet engine.
Any ideas??.
Any ideas??.

you may need to run the whole engine turbo'd motors run less compression ratio unless you have checked this out and they are the same.

Re: Hijet Turbo
Not checked anything out. Just got the idea into my head!. Couldn't fit the whole engine etc as it wouldn't fit.
turbo
a normal engine useually runs about 8.5:1 to 10:1 comp ratio a high comp engine 10.5:1 up 13:1 where as a turbo depending on boost pressure is 7:1 depending on what the hijet engine is you may find it easier to buy a bolt on super charger as the gear ratio can be altered to increase or decrease boost psi depending on what other engine work you do also a super charger has a more progressive boost to the power where as a turbo has to spin up so initially works against the engine till enough exhaust gas is flowing to provide the boost which can kick in when its not wanted (see group N rally car the renault 5 turbo used to kick in and throw themselves off the road). The super charger uses some of the extra power to over come itself where as a turbo is very nearly something for nothing.

Re: Hijet Turbo
Where would I start to look for a supercharger??. I have seen the electric super chargers on ebay but the reviews are .........
turbo
your best bet with engine tuning is to look up the local engine tuners see if you can find a old guy thats been doing it for years failing that it's down to googleing super charging and see what you can find but the electric systems have never worked properly ford used some in their racing capris it was basically a fan that blew air at the intake so they could put it in a different class but even they will admit it made no extra power, if you do it your self you do need to be good at maths get it wrong and youll be looking for a new motor try the library or have a lok for this http://www.amazon.com/Supercharged-Testing-Installation-Supercharger-Systems/dp/0837601681

Re: Hijet Turbo
I think I'll give up on the idea. I have just upgraded from a 660cc to a 1 litre and not even driven it yet to see how much difference it makes!.

When me and the missus were looking for a van on ebay we found a Bedford Rascal which outwardly is similar to the hijet and it had a 3 litre essex V6 fitted with a auto box and only looked like the back engine cowl had been modded to clear the rear of the heads, just looked its not on ebay anymore but it was having cooling probs as the rad is just in front of the motor like the hijet pick up! Still we were very tempted Cool but have also heard of all sorts of motors being fitted but a heavy old essex lump would certainly add a load of low down weigth which is good for handling I tell people that the vans a sports car Well its rear wheel drive, mid engine and its got half a V6
Re: Hijet Turbo
The biggest job with any sort of forced induction conversion would be the custom engine management. Getting the fueling and ignition tables right means it might last more than 10 miles.
Re: Hijet Turbo
Perhaps you should have stayed with a 660cc but used a 660 turbo. The Daihatsu motors are some of the best and can give a slightly lightened hijet 14 second 1/4 mile times with standard internals. Hijets come out with these in Japland so they just fit right in and due to the low weight they still handle quite well.

Eaton Superchargers can be picked up cheaply off bmw mini coopers and they sound awesome. Did you buy the charade? I've been looking for a cheap gtti for a while, is it still available?

Here is some more info on the original hijet turbo first released in 1984. I have just bought one of these 2cylinder turbo's from an importer. It has been sitting on a shelf in a warehouse for about 15 years. Ill be rebuilding it and finding a donor van soon. The 660 3 cylinder turbos are much more powerful but the 2 cylinder should be amazingly good on fuel. Ill be converting it to run on E85 too which will keep it nice and cool.
