Leaking fuel: Petrol/LPG confusion Empty Leaking fuel: Petrol/LPG confusion

Post by andy pyke Mon Sep 19, 2016 10:54 am

Very confused now. My new Hijet has a leaking fuel tank. I know that and have a plan to sort it (kind of). This morning I parked it up to find fuel dripping from the LPG tank! LPG=gas so how can there be fuel dripping from there?? Is there a confused fuel line running between the 2 fuel systems? Is it just bad luck that I've got 2 fuel leaks in different places?

Anyone ever experienced this or got any clues?

As always, all advice greatly appreciated!

Oh, it does need a bit of fuel usualy to start on LPG (more noticeable in the cold, mine started on LPG fine in the summer) but I didn't think there were any fuel lines going to the LPG tank

You don't say what type of fuel is leaking, the smell should tell you.

Perhaps petrol is running back along a body member and dripping off near the LPG tank?

The clue to the nature of LPG is in it's name -- Liquid Petroleum Gas. It is a gas which becomes liquid when stored in a pressure vessel. So yes it could visibly leak. It is being liquid that allows it to be pumped at the filling station.

Thanks Bushwacker. In that case I've got leaks on both tanks by the looks of things. The smell is, well, petrol. I wouldn't know what LPG smells like. It could be petrol running along another body member to the LPG tank but logically the petrol should just drip from the lowest part of the tank which is the deeper part next to the filling inlet, and this is what it does.

The fact that the LPG suddenly started dripping this morning is confusing because I haven't put any LPG into it yet and don't even know if that system works. The LPG leak was quite sudden, as if triggered by something.

If the LPG leaked, wouldn't it come out as a vapour under high pressure?

I believe it can leak briefly just like petrol but it will evaporate quickly. I also believe that they put the gas pong in LPG but I haven't any leaks so can't check.

When mine leaked it had a distinct gas smell, nothing like petrol
