I've got the same problem - I'm torn between making up a swing away wheel carrier or just reinforcing the tailgate, fabbing up a wheel carrier and bolting it direct. Meantime I'm just not carrying it and praying... What a Face

If you attached the spare wheel to the tail gate, it would be very heavy to lift up and hold up.

It really it a slight design oversight!

I was considering either acquiring a pair of extra struts and doubling them up or sourcing stronger struts from another vehicle, but decided that I don't often use the tailgate so a little extra weight wouldn't be much of an inconvenience.

Besides, I'm planning on mounting a flat screen telly on the inside of the tailgate anyway...

I would knock up a simple "A" bar for the front and mount the wheel to that or a roofrack at the back or front just for the wheel. "A" bar for me the most sensible

Define "Bullbar". The EU has banned the sale of non-compliant metal bullbars. You could argue that it is a homemade metal frame to mount your spare, but you'd need to inform your insurance company of the modification - which you may well find out that the company won't cover you for when they turn round and say its "non-compliant".

Bull bars are not "illegal"

The sale an supply of them has been controlled by EU Directive 2005/66/EC.

You can still fabricate and fit your own.

From 25th May 2007 for motor vehicles categorised as M1 (a passenger carrying vehicle not exceeding 3.5 tonnes and not more than 8 passengers) or N1 (a goods vehicle not exceeding 3.5 tonnes) it will only be legal to manufacturer and sell bull bars that comply with EU Directive 2005/66/EC.

It will be illegal to manufacture and sell bull bars that do not conform to this legislation punishable by a maximum penalty, to be imposed within the UK, of 12 months imprisonment and/or a fine of £20,000.

Operators of vehicles already fitted with these devices will not be affected
