Post by craig2859 Wed Oct 30, 2013 6:27 pm

Hi Guys,

Well my Van failed its MOT today, on a number of points.

1.  Offside sliding door does not open from outside

Require a new Plastic outer door handle -  Anyone ??
Also, how do I get the inner handle off, so I can remove the door card?

2.  Exhaust blowing

Its coming from the second to last box, but I may just replace the whole thing.  Does anyone know where to source a complete exhaust system?

3.  Passenger door will not open from the inside

Quick fix, as the grey inner handle has broken inside, so will need a new one - Anyone ??

Van is a 1.0 and on an R plate.

Sliding door handles are retained by a little spring clip that you have to slide off, here is a photo:-

MOT - Failed, need some advice please :) Imag1010

I have no internal handles remaining to sell anymore at all.

I do have 1 drivers side external handle, which is not perfect though.

For exhausts:-

The best place to go is a guy called Regis exhausts on ebay. He makes them for the Hijet at about £100 including delivery.

This is a link to the petrol ones he does:-

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DAIHATSU-HI-JET-PICKUP-REAR-EXHAUST-SILENCER-2000-2004-/120702571861?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c1a6f1555

Ring him:-

Phone: 07906860717

Email: regisexhausts@virginmedia.com

Motor factors etc will want something around £250 to £300 for a system believe it or not!

Sliding doors not opening from outside is not a MOT fail on a van (mine have, at times, passed at 2 or 3 different test stations) though it is on a MPV.

As I read the MOT handbook now, It seems that only passenger access doors apply to the MOT test. So MPV needs all 5 working, while a van only needs the front 2.

However if it isn't there they can't fail it on it so take all the seats out and the seat belts it then is only a van with windows they can then only put an advisory for not being able to test as not fitted they are Multi Purpose Vehicles not people carriers afterall and the fifth door is a bit of a grey area as how many cars (vehicles) with rear seats have you seen that the boot can be opened from the inside even constuction and use says all doors should be able to be opened from the inside and outside.

However if you don't want to take the seats etc out take the broken handle off and use cable ties to attach a big cable tie to the pull rod and poke it out of the hole in the door and add some thing like a loop of pipe lagging to create a pull handle this will suffice as a get you through bodge.

A passenger door, internal door opening handle
MOT - Failed, need some advice please :) $(KGrHqF,!lME4lpili4IBOSoMpQwkw~~60_35

The pic posted in the above post, I am sure is a window winder is it not?

I need to know how to get the sliding door - internal door opener off, ie one of these:
MOT - Failed, need some advice please :) Right_and_left_car_door_handles_for.jpg_220x220

Cheers for the exhaust info.

Can anyone advise on this system here:

The 'van' has got a bench seat in the back so I assume it needs working doors?

Cheers Rich - I didn't see your post before posting mine.

I think I will attempt to fix it properly if I can - within the 10 days ....

Comments on the Exhaust system would be appreciated though from you guys, as if it looks ok, I think I would order a total new system at that price and have the whole thing done.

I use either a thin electricians screwdriver as does HJ to remove the clip or a little Dentist style pick. Be patient-- first few attempts can raise the blood pressure considerably-- but piece of cake once you get the knack right.

I have some internal sliding door grey handles for sale if you would like to ring me on 07970 391876. Woody.

Cheers everyone, I will source the bits I need, it was worth asking on here first of course.

If anyone 'mechanically' minded could please look over the link above and let me know if this is the right exhaust, and has everything needed, I think I am going to order it at that price. Need to order ASP so any thoughts appreciated. The company is called RSJ Motorfactors - a UK Company.

Ordered a complete exhaust system including gaskets, etc for £180:
http://stores.ebay.co.uk/MR-EXHAUST-01902-401444?_trksid=p2047675.l2563

Will let you know how it goes. Very helpful on the phone, had to check my CAT as there are 2 sizes [390mm / 470mm], mine was the 390mm version.

Delivery free and should arrive on Wednesday

Also ordered a new handle:

When I checked underneath to check the CAT, I also saw how my exhaust looks as though it has been changed from the standard layout ...... looks very strange indeed:

Here is the second bend:

MOT - Failed, need some advice please :) 3fdaa718-84fd-4326-9575-ee7ac429a08f_zpsa33434f5

As you can see it comes from the downpipes, into a CAT, does a 180 and back down, does another 180 and into another box [which has had it] and then into the back box [Sports one]

Better Picture of whole layout:

MOT - Failed, need some advice please :) 6a719313-3ba4-41d2-8660-617b75e67a4b_zpsa16c446b

Why do you think it has this layout?

Because its been butched by some kind of idiot - just look at them 90 degree bends. They will hurt your economy and performance no end.

I bet if you put a proper exhaust on it you would notice the difference.

In regard to rsj motor factors be wary as they tried to flog me a water pump for 90 quid when the 30 quid one they were selling was acceptable. Do your research and make sure it's the parts you need.

The standard exhaust on a 1litre does indeed have the cat next to the silencer with a pipe curving out of the back of the cat to go round then in the front of the silencer. There is only one silencer and the pipes are curved, those look almost like squared corners to me. (and there should be a heat shield under the cat.)

New Exhaust System arrived today - great service overall, and looks well made too.

Fitted a new handle to the offside sliding door, and got a free bearing too with it, so had the door off to fit that - glides smoothly now, the old bearing had totally collapsed.

All ready to go back in for MOT tomorrow
