Errmmmm! Yes - yes it does that it burnt or caramelised oil which means it's got bloody hot at some point or the headgaskets blowing into the oil ways.
Re: Lots of gunk under oil filler cap
Looks pretty grim, looks like its neglected one way or another.
I see you have an LPG one! Wonder if its a Fulham council one?

Yeah I've took it off to clean it looks pretty nasty.
Not sure exactly where it came from, I bought it off a lady in bath though I think it did come from London. It is in v good cond for year with only 60000 miles so maybe its ex council?

If it's not over-heating, I'd treat it to an engine flush and new oil and filter smartish.

Re: Lots of gunk under oil filler cap
Thanks, those are my next jobs after timing belt!
No overheating and the oil actually looks great in the engine nice golden brown its just full of that crusty hard deposit at the top of the filler pipe.
Hopefully its not indicative of a deeper problem!

IMHO crusty hard deposits are never good! Maybe Logi has an opinion?

Re: Lots of gunk under oil filler cap
I have never seen an oil crust build up like this on anything before, it almost look like beads.
Maybe its had some kind of additive put in the oil at some point? Just a wild guess like.
Is it hard or sludgy? Peel some out and spread it like butter on some white paper and post another photo.

Yeah, Bold 3in 1, works well with crusty deposits on sheets......PFM wrote:IMHO crusty hard deposits are never good! Maybe Logi has an opinion?
Mines had something similar, whats the mileage? Mine had 8k done in 1/2 mile segments. Loads of short journeys can cause it( or the hg is f*cked)

Re: Lots of gunk under oil filler cap
Thanks for the replies.
I've cleaned it all off now but it was actually milky brown oil lower down which I guess dried at the top to make the hard crusty stuff in the pic and the pipe narrows there which made me think it was really thick when its just the pipe narrowing.
Hopefully its just hot engine vapour condensed on the tubing built up over time and not a dreaded head gasket failure!
I think Logi's saying you can get it from lots of short journeys
I'll def keep an eye on it now though

Re: Lots of gunk under oil filler cap
Just a thought there is a smoke stop product for adding to oil to reduce the smoke from valve stem and piston ring wear it is a bodge that I only look at while trying to find a product I do want that works. Which is just like the crap and dodgy dealers we were talking about the other day talking of which I had to fix a pair of wheels that were wrong on a bike sold by a dealer, front was just offset wrong the rear however was a death trap the hub was cracked around the mounting point for the drive/drum mount and dished wrong and most of the spokes on the drive side had a few mm of thread holding the nipples on.

If you're part of the V--- KKJ family it'll probably be an ex Fulham and hammersmith council van.
