how to strip down leaky sun roof on MPV
The front sun roof leaked on me when it rained! as i striped it down i took pics for a step by step guide.
I stripped the sunroof right down to the rubber seal, removed the seal and washed it in warm soapy water, cleaned the metal rail with a dish scrubby/soap, i saw no drain holes in the corners, cleaned glass all the way round.
i did see on the seal there is a 2" section slightly missing on the part that sits in the main rail. i didnt have any sealant to hand, but if it still leaks then i know i can do the job quickly.
refitted everything.. hour tops
1- remove screw caps
2- remove screws
3- remove white plastic skirt, once this is down you can also get access to the roller blind if its broken like one of mine is on the rear sunroof (4 another day)
4- unscrew 2 short screws to release the glass from locking hinge and lift out/off
5- carefully remove rubber seal.
Update.
New van leaked badly from rear sunroof even after doing all of the above.
So here's what else I did..
You need on top of the above list:
Clear bathroom silicone seal
4 sturdy clips min - up to 8. I used the black & red plastic clips you buy off the markets
Then......
Repeat all the steps above to removing & cleaning the rubber seal.
Use clear silicone seal (bathroom) & stand thru the sunroof gap.
Run a bead of sealant around the outside of the subfloor mounting plate. Run your finger over the bead to smooth it out.
Run a single bead of sealant in BOTH channels that the rubber seal sits.
Refit the rubber seal & use clips to secure the corners from pulling out. I also used clips in the middle sections for good measure.
Leave for a good hour so do this on a dry day.
Re-assemble glass/screws etc.

Re: how to strip down leaky sun roof on MPV
Hmm,
I've got a slight leak maybe on the passenger side - doesn't bother me, but the wife complains I'm not convinced it actually is a leak and more a point where a large amount of condensation collects and then drops. I've never been a fan of sun roofs, even factory fit one's leak eventually, and if this proves to be in this case then I am very seriously considering removing the whole dam thing and replacing it with a welded in metal patch - no chance of a leak then!
Having said that, I was looking through a copy of Practical Classics the other day and one of the writers mentioned a product sold by 'Frost Restorations' (www.Frost.co.uk) that is supposed to totally recondition and refurbish old rubber, so it might just be worth checking that out first before I dig out the Mig

acrilic sealant
Csptain Tolleys creeping crack cure!
Sounds like it should be on prescription.
This seals leaks on windows on boats, may work for your sunroof. Although if it only takes an hour I would fix it.

Just updated this for using silicone seal.
Seems to have worked this time.

If using sealant in this way does it still allow the sunroof to be opened and closed normally?

Re: how to strip down leaky sun roof on MPV
I know its an old post, but just to add. I tried every everything to stop the front sunroof leaking on my 97 1.0 EFI 6 seater. So I bought a sunroof off a 2002 model my local hi-jet breakers for £20. Its a different type. No plastic strip to unscrew. Just a push fit rubber moulding, and tinted glass. Fits perfect Its brill now just keeping dry

Re: how to strip down leaky sun roof on MPV
Another comment on an old topic - but helpful I hope. My Porter 1.3 EFi MPV had a serious water leak showing itself in a wet passenger side footwell. I followed all the advice available on this forum about stripping the sun roof and checking all the usual suspects like window seal, washer jet stalk, headlight access cover etc to no avail. I thought I'd found the culprit when I removed the door card as there was water getting through the plastic sheet covering all the door mechanisms - but not that either. I even took advice from the local sunroof fitter, but no joy.
Eventually after lots of trial and error with the hose pipe I found the culprit! The glass screen is punctuated three times, twice along the front edge by the two locating/hinge pins and once on the back edge by the raising mecanism. These do have weatherproof washers but they distort and disintegrate and eventualy fail. It was the top seals of front two small plastic pegs that were leaking, allowing water to drip through and into the white rubber surround underneath. (Tip - when checking for leaks with a hosepipe remove the rubber finisher as it acts like a gutter and holds a surprising amount of water). I made new washers from double sided numberplate tape (weatherproof) but also sealed them in place with clear silicone. Result - no more leaks, at all.
John.
