You don't show a pic from the side! Certainly not have an issue with traction with that load in.

Strewth!! Poor little van. Wouldn't fancy that lot visiting me in the front seat on heavy braking.

Re: Hey whats in yer van today?
For once I had 8 cylinders in the van!
At least I have a nice engine to play around with! I got a lot of ideas, time on the other hand is another thing....
Also want to do some investigation in the ratio of the diff so I picked that one up as well.

Re: Hey whats in yer van today?
Don't know if you are talking about the V8 axle or a Hi-Jet one. The 1300 axle has a ratio of 4.44 to 1. The early 60's Anglia van had that ratio on 13" tyres, never mind smaller 12" ones.
Next comes the 993cc axle with an even lower ratio of 4.875 to 1 and last and least the 1200 Diesel has a mind numbingly lower ratio of 5.125 to 1. Good acceleration if used on a 1300 with 12" tyres but not exactly economical. Mind you the Diesel 1200 never was economical - except when being launched over a cliff where they belong.

Re: Hey whats in yer van today?
I know already read that in another topic.
I was also investigating the ratio's from other brands. The Suzuki Samurai has also some interesting ratio's:
lj80 4.56
410 4.11
413 3.909
samurai 3.727

Re: Hey whats in yer van today?
Hi Patrick. 3.7 is a pretty high ratio to pull but if you are doing a lot of Auto route driving then would be ideal.
In the Ford Escort Mk2's that I used to run with 1600cc engines I ran a 3.77 diff. The highest ratio for the English axle was 3.54.
I had a FULL RACE 1760cc dry sumped running on Weber DCOE 48's, Steel Crank, Steel Rods, Steel Flywheel and BORG&BECK Sintered Clutch, Forged Alloy Mahle Pistons and revving to 11,000 developing 176bhp. It was Ludicrous fun in my Mk2 Escort Van. No power below 5,000 rpm.
Imagine what fun that would have been in a Hi-Jet now.
Are you going to put the 1300 lump in your BEAUTIFUL PICK-UP or 993cc Van?
Not wishing to sound the least bit negative coz I love Street Sleepers or Wolves in Sheep's Clothing, but have you really dug DEEP into how much you are going to have to change. Ideally you need a complete 1300 van for things like the Gearbox, Propshaft, Engine and gearbox cradles,. Things like the cradle bolt mountings in the chassis are in different places, the Gear box mounts are in a different place and will need spot welds drilling through to remove etc etc. Plus all the 1300 wiring loom, throttle and clutch cables. A major project but if I remember correctly you have got a great workshop. But I would definitely recommend trying to find a complete 1300 van for all that you need.
A friend of mine built an Escort Jeep kit car in Malta and drove an Escort Mk2 over there taxed and Mot'd and stripped it completely then reported it as stolen. What a naughty boy.

Re: Hey whats in yer van today?
Hmmm. Just re-read your thread. I was thinking for some reason that despite having picked up a V8 that you were putting a 1300 lump in it. I must write out 100 times = I must pay more attention to other people's posts.

Re: Hey whats in yer van today?
Hey Woodie.
The 8 cylinders was just a joke! 4 cylinders from the Van itself and 4 cylinders in the back.
I've picked up a 1300 Hijet engine, rear axle and prop shaft. This is all just for experimenting.
My Van and Pick-up are already 1.3 versions an not 993cc. Although I have a 993cc Van from Lex standing at my fathers place as well. But not really sure what the plan will be with that one. I was thinking about a compete new project, but time is the bottleneck.
For now I want to check out the rear axle first. See if I can make my Pick-up run a little more relaxed on the highway.
When I was in Belgium (were the land is not only flat like here in the Netherlands) I noticed that it had a lot of torque. No need to shift back when going up hill. So my idea was to change the ratio of the rear axle a little to get the RPM's down.
It's just an idea, so no fixed plan yet. But I could pick up an rear axle as well while I was picking up the prop shaft that I needed. So now I can see and feel instead of just working form paper.

Re: Hey whats in yer van today?
I looked on my Tablet last night and could see clearly that the engine is a Hi-Jet lump.
On this little Z5 the picture wasn't too clear - and being 75% blind in my left eye does not help matters either ..

Crumbs, that is a bigger Ole lump than my Wife.
Even the ZX1 won't compensate for that overloading.

Cant believe it either. The place is next to my workplace. Not visible for outsiders. Lucky shot. Making excellent progress with the ramp.
