See what you mean by the header sticking down, I have already been thinking of putting mine in upside down, then doing the exhaust up the back of the cab truck style (with a little flapper cover plate )
I'm not having a back axle like that, and i'm not shaft driving it either.
Its having a solid axle like a kart, with a chain drive. And the engine will be much further back.
But i'm very much open to ideas?

why are you having a solid axle with chain drive?
if you rotated the engine sideways (like the R1 engine in the pics), you could then have a sprocket on the diff input flange.
that would allow you to play around with the gearing much more easily

I think I might have to consolidate this into one thread before it gets messy....
This is what makes me think chain driven solid axle:-
If I spin the engine round it will be off centre - not the biggest issue though
I have to have a prop shaft - thus the engine needs to be further forwards
Two engines onto one prop shaft is an engineering complexity - unlike a twin engined pro-kart's simplicity
Diffs are expensive (especially LSD's) and heavy
Solid axles also act as an anti roll bar if you build a trailing swinging arm frame type affair
I can change sprockets all day to change my gearing

How could I put a sproket on a diff flange and still operate suspension while the engine is attached to the chassis - the chain length and allignment would move about. Putting the engine on the axle would make the unsprung weight crazy. Or am I not getting your idea?

well you could make a frame off the rear axle, and mount the engine to it (which would keep the unsprung weight down)
but I was thinking more along the lines of fitting a central location bar/strap to the axle, to connect it to the chassis.
the suspension could move up at both sides (one only), but you would still have some suspension (articulation) so speed bumps/potholes/etc wouldnt be too uncomfortable
but because the diff would never alter where it was located, the chain drive to the flange should be fine.
the location bar would also stop the rear end squatting during acceleration.

That would have a whole lot more 'win' for me if it was subtly painted with something disguising the engine.

Ash, I want a load of milk crates and the plastic milk bottles painted inside with white emmulsion on the back of mine when it get to santa pod one day - then it wheelies its way down the first 20 metres
