Does anyone have a Load Compensator Valve (brakes) for Diahatsu Hijet Pickup 2005? Or does anyone have a photo of one or know if its the same part for both the pick up and van?  Thanks.

Hello Gee. Yes the Load Sensing Valve is the same for both van and pickup. How do you know that yours is not working is the first question. Second is: where in the UK are you? Always helps to know what area new members are in as you may have someone near to you who may be able to help you - or avoid you as the case may be. Rolling Eyes

Thanks for prompt reply Woodie.  It's failed MOT and garage have told me the valve is seized and not giving braking to rear wheels, only to the front. So seriously fail!  I'm helping them to find parts.  I'm in Norwich.

Hard things to come by.. Some members have done away with the valve and put in a T piece I believe. OK if it is a van and you are carrying a bit of weight in the van.
Being a Pickup its a bit more awkward to have a bit of weight over the back wheels.
I have in the past dismantled the valve and cleaned it successfully.

There is only a small amount of movement on the piston literally a few millimetres. Might be worth trying to get it " unglued" before looking for another one. I don't think that I have any to spare. Have a couple more Hi-Jets to strip, but they have been standing for some time and probably stuck too.

Thanks again Woodie.  My pick up (a Romahome Camper) is identical to yours. So there is a constant weight over the back wheels.  Would this then help?

I am not telling you what to do one way or another. I have just related what I have done and what other members have done.

If you think about it logically, with your Romahome body on the back will be sat down quite a bit and so the Load Sensing Valve will be in fully open position anyway. Talk with your garage. See what conclusion they come to if you put it to them the way I have put it to you. They are the ones you are paying to get it through the Mot.

HJ used to strip and unseize these, and I found these pics he took when looking for something else the other day.

Well done Inspector PFM. Nice bit of Detective work there. We certainly miss Matt's massive input to this site.

MOT test reason for rejection;

Evidence that a load sensing valve has been removed or disconnected from a vehicle where it is known to have been fitted as standard.

Right, well that puts that to bed then.
Wouldn't like to have to buy a new one.

Yes, because every MOT tester in the land will know these should have them fitted, won't they...?

Maybe they won't realise that commercial vehicles have load sensing valves? Maybe. . . . . . . ?

Mine failed for the same reason. After copying and pasting some of highly jetted advice and sending it to my mechanic mate we realised it was probably a weak spring. The was a little panel that that moved up and down that was connected to the spring that we zip clipped up to stop it moving. It passed the test fine, although they didn't actually look under there to see what we had done. The figures on the rolling road was all I needed to get the certificate.

Once again thanks to highly jetted for saving me. I really owe you a few pints

Last mot I put a load of weight in the back and it passed. That's the first time it has not been an issue

I think I can see what happened now, that after overloading it the bracket mounting the valve to the chassis has become bent so the actuating spring is no longer flush up against the piston. It's not easy to get to this without removing to bend it back though I may try tightening a ratchet around it and the nearby parallel bit of chassis and leaving overnight.
The truck got through when I took it for retest with some rather large cross sections of oak on top of it!
