Ventilated battery box

Just taken out the battery to fit a new one and using the opportunity to wire brush out the rust and give it a coat of paint to retard the tin worm. Once the battery was out there was nothing at all left in the box, no mat or side padding, retaining clamps etc and there are 4 slots in the bottom to let in spray from the back wheel, should these be covered or plugged in some way?
