How to check an alternator

Hello
From battery there are only 2 wires:the main wire and the one which goes straithaway to the alternator and both are in good conditions.But one of the 2 wires which are from the alternator to the engine control unit does not have electricity. So i would like to check the regulator of the alternator but i didn't yet manage with an alternator.so i want to know how to check an alternator regulator or an alternator?
