1.3 overheating problem

I didn't think the 1.3's had this tendancy, but mine has just over heated.
It was fine, running as well as normal, did 5 miles and looked at the heating gauge, and it was almost next to maximum, with only 300 yards to get home I carried on and when I reached the junction I heard it bubbling under me but no steam was coming from radiator.

I did notice that I couldn't hear the fan, what could cause that not to come in and would it overheat after five miles even if it didn't?

I've had a look and all the water is there but the oil was about a mil or two below the bottom level, could this be the cause?

no that's one of the symptoms mate

to pinpoint the actual cause is hard over a keyboard,

my route to a solution goes a little like this:-

Drain it all out
Pressure test it with a tyre valve and air pump
Resolve any minor leaks with pipe new clips etc
Buy a new radiator cap and thermostat, and a gallon of pink antifreeze from a motorfactors (about £25-30 total spend)
Flush the system while the thermostat is out
Fit new thermostat
refill with decent coolant mix and bleed well and fit new cap

Then I bet you'll not have any more problems or headaches from it

That seems well beyond my know how, looks like I need to get it booked in to a garage

Just had her running and the fan came in, which it didn't do before, not sure how relevant this is

You have a leak, air is getting in & water out. Mine did the same thing, do as HJ suggests, check the hoseclips, esp the ones on the 2 big hoses at the rad. Squeeze them, see if they're still springy, thats where mine was leaking from.

Chesterfields just over the hill from a place that loves bleeding hijet coolant systems if only I could remember who it is maybe Highly jetted will know he lives that way.

Just been a run, about 6 miles and no problem at all, all I've done so far is fill the oil up, I'll give it a bit longer run tomorrow and have RAC number handy

If you don't bleed it properly you'll go round in circles

Well it lasted about two weeks without any issues, then overheated on the way up to Buxton last Thursday, but not on way home
Then it was fine going to Derby on friday but overheated on way home

I'm thinking about trying something simple to start with, I don't have a clue how to bleed the system and don't have the know how to flush it out, but think I could possibly be able to change the thermostat and see what difference that makes

Two questions
Where would I get an appropriate thermostat from, Halfords?
Where is it located on the engine?

If it does it randomly and your not getting lots of water loss and gain in the header tank then it's more than likely a sticking thermostat.

The other ways to know if it is this for sure - when it over heats the fan will not kick in, the radiator will be cool, and the bottom two hoses under the front bumper will be cool. You should still get hot air coming from the blower fans in the cab.

I bought my thermostat at Partco Motorfactors, but any local motorfactors will do. Avoid QH (a brand) thermostats as they are of rough manufacturing quality. I like blue print or nipparts personally but I'm sure there are many good ones. The 2 that I bought from part co cost me about £10 each. You will also need anti freeze.

You can take it off without much trouble but you need to be competent with tools etc. You'll need a nice little 10mm 1/4 socket, some extension bars and a 1/4 UJ for the hard to access bolt at the bottom.
