Hijet newbie
Hi, I am a new proud owner of a 1998 1.3 efi Hijet van, which I wasn't looking to buy(it found me). It was within a mile from home in sunny Hayle in Cornwall and kept popping up on a facebook selling page, one of my 11 year old sons has been banging on about hijets for months so we looked, we liked, we bought. It is really clean for it's age, in faded white, has had 4 owners and various degrees of care and attention. Currently without mot, the seller assured me that the only thing it needs is a water pump and thermostat( I read that as head gasket), but it was super cheap so its now here at home. My daily transport is a Honda c90 so the van can be sorted over the coming months, initial plan Is to go through the mechanicals, confirm the cooling/water issues and send her for an mot. After that it will be tidied up with the top half going grey to match my bike. I will fabricate a ramp so during wet cold winter months the bike can ride inside the van!!!!

Re: Hijet newbie
welcome
buying an overheating hijet without mot is not the smarstest thing to do.
half of this forum is about overheating hijets.
its a really precise job to get sorted/100%.
and you will go from 1 thing to another..
and if you get it 100% you will have probably spend an amount that would have bought you a decent one in the first place.
i did the same thing ...
do you want to see my replaced parts list ?
but there is/are a lot of helpfull info/people on here
so you came to the right place
greetings from the netherlands

Re: Hijet newbie
Feel like swearing!! But I won't. Well here goes again.
I bought my first Hi-Jet - a red 1998 pick-up in 2003 and have covered over 45,000 miles since then, mostly on the Isle of Wight.
It has overheated on numerous occasions whilst being thrashed round the Island and stuck in a traffic jam in the summer. It was usually a weeping hose or faulty thermostat but I make a point of checking and changing both Rad Caps regularly and bleeding the system with a mains water pressure hose pipe.
It has survived some quite dramatic brew-ups and still has the original head-gasket. It has been off the road since January but I shall be resurrecting it shortly if it hasn't rusted too badly underneath.
It's going to need a couple of Headlights for starters but see what else when I take it for Mot.
Anyway welcome to the Best Hi-Jet Forum in the World.
You will find a wealth of experienced Hi-Jetters on here.
And if you need advice - always ASK. Woody.

Re: Hijet newbie
At least buying one that over heats, you know where you stand
Most people contact me after buying a "decent" van, which over heated on the motorway on their way home!
So as long as you paid the right money for it, and can do the work it actually is the best route into hijet ownership.
Welcome to the forum Enjoy, and good luck.
