LED lights upgrade
well since i done all the interior lights, thought i'd do the exterior too i fitted LED side repeaters brake/tail lights and reverse light to my hi jet this evening.. i love LED's me so efficient and bright, my dad also fitted them to his Triumph GT6 as well... we both had to replace our flasher relays with a LED compatible ones since LED's draw less current....... still got the number plate lights to do too give's a modern look too
also, modded the reverse light with a LED and tin foil and it's very bright, like a work light
these are the bulbs , had to get orange ones for the front of the van since the lenses are clear
here's the ebay link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251646658187?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2648&var=550550910193&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I'm thinking of doing the same to help the alternator out as it's only small. What flasher unit did you fit?

Just checking
Hi Ryan,
I want to do the LED upgrade and wanted to check on the compatibility of the bulbs you linked to on ebay.
Can I put these directly in to my stop lights, reverse lights and fog lights?
Also, how difficult is it to change an indicator relay? Where are they tucked away?
How did you mod the reverse light? If I spray the inside silver and put the LED in, do you reckon that will work?
Many thanks!

Re: LED lights upgrade
LED replacement bulbs are wank.
Every week cars come in with them not working properly.
They are not properly bright.
They are chinese shite.
There is nothing to gain from them. More expensive and less reliable.

Has either of you got a link as I have just done a search and nothing came back on the government legislation site.
Re: LED lights upgrade
The basics are here: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1989/1796/contents/made
and this is interesting, especially the para on retrofitting: http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/safety/daytime-running-lights.html
but can't find the link I found some months back. Will keep looking.

Re: LED lights upgrade
I don't think there is any c&u legislation against LED retro fit.
As long as the lights are clear, bright and correctly coloured I don't think there is a problem.
Someone will bash on about type approval, but this is the UK not europe.

Re: LED lights upgrade
My understanding was that bulbs could be upgraded to led as long as they were E marked. If they are not then they are for 'display purposes only'.
It is possible it has changed and something I saw relatively recently seemed to indicate it, or was it someone who just had different ideas?
About two months ago there was an article in 'Car Mechanics', I think, which seemed to say led bulbs were not legal in old cars but unless something else was wrong the MOT tester would not check them. They did say though that changing the headlight bulbs to led would be illegal. So who is right? (The magazine is probably still available as a back copy).
There are also people on the internet selling led bulbs and boards specifically for classic cars.

Re: LED lights upgrade
Ok I haven't read it all word for word but I find no mention of retro fitting LEDs and only filament bulbs to be of British Standard.
