Check Engine Light

Hi All
I was driving along today, luckily not too far from home, when the amber 'check engine light' came on, and
has stayed on. The van is running perfectly, no missing, overheating or anything. I have checked everything
I can think of (limited, 'cos I ain't no mechanic!!) So..... any suggestions as to causes & action to take?
