Hijet ignition timing 993 cb42 engine slow idle
I have a P rg 993cc CB-42 hijet I have just done the cylinderhead and put it all back together it runns but is slow on idle about 575rpm and smells like its ignition timing is out as its overfueling an popping back. I have a strobe so the first thing is to adjust the idle as it says in the manual 5 degrees+- BTDC.does anyone know the best way of upping idle and checking timing with a strobe as this is arkayic and not been out my toolbox since i bought it 16 years ago.

Press the accelerator a bit?!
Get the timing right then mess with the idle.
Timing on a 993 is an arse, just been messing with one today. If you have taken the whole distributor off the head, then you need ensure you put the distributor back in while it's at cylinder 1 TDC, and the dizzy arm is in the middle of plug number 1's contact spot.
I'd never done one before today, and I didn't take this van apart!! It crossed my mind why so many people have come on here with ignition issues after putting their engine back together.
But Mr Smug time:- my first attempt started 1st time and with a little bit of fine adjustment with a timing light it ran sweet.
To use the light, connect it to HT Lead number 1, then take the rubber off from the top of the gear box, then bridge the diagnostic connector..... then start it up and adjust the dizzy till you can see the little dimple on the flywheel in the little timing marker.

CHEERS MINE STARTS AND RUNS BUT NEED TO STROBE IT IS THE TIMING 850RPM AND 5DEG+- BTDC? HOW DO YOU ADJUST THE IDLE IS IT THAT SMALL SCREW UNDER THE THROTLE? DO YOU STILL NEED TO BRIDGE DIAG CONNECTOR AND REMOVE THE ADVANCE HOSE FOR A 993CC

Re: Hijet ignition timing 993 cb42 engine slow idle
There is an archaic timing method which I always use on our MPV as it is an arse with the light - get the engine warm then rev it to a fast idle like it does on cold start up a helper is useful but not essential and then while holding the throttle position adjust the dizzy back and forth slowly and listen for the highest engine speed and set it there, no need to short the diagnostic plug or see around corners, and hopefully the idle speed is correct.

When u do ignition timing where should the mark be on the flywheel lining up with the pointer exactly or slightly forward of it if it's 6 degrees +-

Should line up perfect.
But you have to bridge the diagnostic connector to put it in static timing mode.
It tells you this on the passenger door sticker.

Where is the diag connector?

Re: Hijet ignition timing 993 cb42 engine slow idle
I did the timing with the strobe but didn't do anything with the diag plug and seems to be running rich and not responsive from throttle maybe I'll try it again at 850 rpm with diag plug bridged

You 100% have to bridge the connector.
You may find that you end up at the limit of the dizzy adjustment, I did the first time.
Lumpy running unstable idle on a 993 is normally down incorrect timing and sometimes vacuum pipework issues, look at the pipe barb on the inlet manifold near the alternator which feeds to map sensor, solenoid and fuel pressure regualor.
This pipe barb is often cracked, bodged or blocked.
Also inspect these pipes for cracks especially near the map sensor.

Above the ecu in the passenger side footwell.
3 pin plug with male spades in it.

I have tried to do the timing again and bridged the diag connector removed vac pipe and tried to adjust timing I pointed the strobe at the pointer and got the pointer exactly ligned up at. 6.5 deg BTDC which was right I took it down the road and it was flat as a fart so I manually adjusted timing to and read 22 degrees on strobe but runs ok .Is the eml light supposed to come on when diag connection bridged

What's pipe barb is it the union screwed into inlet manifold where pipes go

Yes the light should flash really quickly.
Yes I mean the union.
Also check the cam belt is on correctly if you are having timing headaches.
The mark on the flywheel is a fire mark, not a TDC mark. There may be 2 marks though.

Hi what wires do you bridge on the diagnostic plug for the ignition timing? Anyone
