Well got the repairs underway yesterday at long last. got both rear wheel cylinders done and the new shoes in. I have to say that it was not such a bad job apart from the return springs for the hand brake levers, what a cow to get back on! brake unions needed some teasing but came undone ok in the end.

So discs and pads this morning and a bleed through, and some adjustment and god willing I will have some decent brakes at last. Very Happy

Before you start, make sure the bleed nipple on the load sensing valve is free( ang the valve works) or you'll be pissing in the wind.

Thanks logi, without manual i was unaware thr load sensor has a bleed screw. Thought it odd that only the n/s had a nipple. Took a long bleed but i do have 100% better brakes now.
I will check the nipple on the sensor, how do i check the valve?
Few niggly little damas up front, o/s caliper neededthe slider working but did sort it. Bit of lube and working got the pins out.

There's a piston that the arm pushes on, it needs to move, pretty sure there's pics on here somewhere.

Hi Logi,

i've had a look at said compensator and trying to get my head round how it works. I assume that when the van is loaded the arm moves up towards the piston and pushes on it? should it touch the piston anyway or not? then under braking it pushes harder onto the piston?

so I need to test its working, I guess I need to lever the arm up make sure the pistons moves up and down yeah?

Is it possible to work it up and down?

Yep, wiggle the arm, if the piston moves up it works.

Ahh, Bear with me here logi Wink

I have been under the van and doused the sensor, nipple etc with wd40. When I pull the arm down the piston is staying put and not dropping down or will it only do so if the arms held away and the foot brake is operated? if I try to push the arm up the piston does not appear to move. Its as if it is stuck up as far as it will go in.

So in order to work the piston, would holding the arm down out of the way and hitting the brake possibly shift the piston down, then lever the arm back up. Then keep at it like this till it hopefully moves freely?

Or do you have another method?

I see there is a nos sensor on ebay cheap, if all else fails!

Though with the arm.pulled.down if you push against the rubber cap it should move a wee bit. As long as the rear brakes operate it doesnt matter Smile

Brakes settled in nice now.

n/s front wheel bearing tomorrow now I managed to get one and not a day too soon either.
I knew it was iffy but pushed on and did the brakes anyway. Its been making some horrible noises today going to and home from work affraid and only stopped when touching the brakes.

There are two bearings in the kit and a seal. I assume its inner and outer for the carrier?

So, just timing belt and tensioner, oil and filters, plugs and tappets to do before she wings her way down from Surrey to deepest north devon.

She seems to have responded thus far to the long overdue love that's been administerd, and not fought back too much! Laughing

Now any advice regards fitting the said timing belt would be fantastic. Any pitfalls to be aware of? looks quite straight forward to the novice eye Laughing

If its a 1.3 they are pretty damn easy.

You spend longer taking the seats out and getting the centre seatbelt support bar out of the way.

I would say the timing marks are a bit dubious!

Hiya Highlyjetted Wink its a 993cc as it goes, any different?

hmmm, was unaware you have to shift the seats etc. Can this be done ok from underneath on a ramp?

as for timing marks being dubious, in what way? just hard to see on the case or on the pulleys?

do you need, or can you lock them in? or just fit belt and rotate by hand three times to make sure they align ok?

Can't really say much for the 993cc as I haven't worked on one.

Yes you could get access from underneath it instead, might have to remove the big plastic splash cover if it still has one.

I never use those lock out pin kits, I just get everything lined up right, put the belt on and roughly tension it, then turn the crank as you've said a few times to re check everything.
