hi i am new to this forum a i have just brought a tidy 1993 990cc van the problem is it starts first time runs on idle perfectly but when i go for a drive it suddenly just stalls without warning all the electrics are fine . I then pull over re start then off i go till the next stall . I wandered if it was the fuel pump or filter it has had some cowboy fit the wrong ignition coil with two outs, one to the dissy cap and one with a loose spark plug hanging in the engine bay.
would this cause the problem i am getting a new coil but any ideas would be good regards paul

Welcome Paul!

Sounds a bit bodged. The wrong coil could cause havoc with the ignitor and associated electronics.

Checked it for error codes?

Crud in the float bowl?

At that sort of age I wouldn't think twice about stripping and cleaning the carb.

If it has a coil with two leads then it is probably a wasted spark coil and if it is then it shouldn't work they are designed to have a plug at each end and provide a spark at both at the same time either in the same cylinder ie twin spark or on a twin cylinder a spark is wasted on the exhaust stroke used in pairs for 4 pots the idea being that one end sparks to earth the other from earth to coil, is the free end all taped up or hanging loose?

thanks hi jet the carb might be a starting place ,rich the spark plug was left wedged next to a peice of card board . i did remove the plug and lead and tried to start the van but it wouldnt start witout it ,

Running a coil without discharging it properly when required will eventually burn out the coil and will cause the other half of the coils winding to misbehave. Thus why it has had a plug bodged on it!

I take it you mean a spark plug is earthed out on the chassis with a bit of card board to hold it in place if so then this is the wasted spark and a free spark isn't a good thing on a carb setup as there are fuel vents and it if is moving it would loose contact and cause your stall effect as well as not do the electrics any favours like HJ said if you have to bodge it for now before the replacement coil arrives I would get to the electrode in the lead and flattern it out and place it under a bolt to keep it earthed.

Or you could get some earth wire out of some 2.5mm twin and earth cable, and make a sort of plug thread holder that you can mount with a bolt to the chassis somewhere. Bit of creative twisting and winding.

As per Rich's suggestion, I'm not sure straight earthing out the coil is OK to do, again it might upset the way it charges and discharges, I'm really not sure. I think plug having a gap to jump, allows discharge at a certain voltage threshold, but not complete discharge because at some voltage point the gap will become to big for it to jump it. I'm really not sure, but I though I would speak my mind! cheers

all depends on the coil have you got a picture of how it is someone may recognise it and know which is the best bodge for now.

I'm also thinking a full service wouldn't go amiss, looks like a usual Hijet previous owner, spend f**k all on it, , sell it to someone who then comes on here.

But don't worry, we can help you fix anything Laughing

Looking at the condition of the plug and location I think clean the plug and earth it like HJ said and it shoud keep you going till you can get the correct coil on there.
