Camping around Europe

I remember reading another thread on here but can't find it. Has anyone got any advice for Camping across Europe. I was going to do it in the jet but think i'm going to convert a Diesel LT35 or something that sort of size. I figured I can be a bit more stealth in a converted van rather than a Motorhome. I guess it needs to be tidy and vaguely resemble a camper so i'm allowed on sites but I also want a few free nights sleep too without getting mugged. I'll have a savage looking dog with me for protection mind.
Would like to make it a big round trip really, france, spain, france, italy(want to spend plenty of time here), croatia, austria, Czech rep, Germany etc.

Any advice much appreciated.
