Who do insure with?
My insurance is due in December and just wondered if anyone else finds this a hastle, if I go through a normal company then it comes up as an MVP, I tell them it's a panel van and they get snotty with me and say " well we are directly linked with dvla so we know it's an mpv" it's never Been an mpv the documents say its a panel van, I have ended up having to get it insured as a commercial vehicle even tho it's plg on the documents, and they now won't insure me to drive other vehicles saying "on a commercial policy you don't get that extra" it seems a bit crap to me I'm sure it's not right
My concern is if my insurance says mpv then if there is a crash will there be a problem if my documents say panel van but or if my insurance says its commercial and my documents say its plg ? I'm not very lucky when it comes to crashes (been in a vehicle for about 14 so far, 4 while i was driving only one being 50% my fault as yet tho!)

Re: Who do insure with?
Mine's insured as part of an Admiral multicar policy, not insured as a commercial as its private use, never had a problem.

Re: Who do insure with?
Mine are both used for work, and have commercial insurance with Aviva. I've never had them wrongly noted as MPV's, and am insured to drive other vehicles through the policy on my car, so that's never been an issue.

Yeah who's that with for £115? for a DIY camper I thought you had to fulfill specific spec - windows, sink etc.

Re: Who do insure with?
I pay £280 through budgetvan as a light commercial vehicle, but strictly for private use. My v5c is registered as a panel van.
As with a typical commercial policy I don't get stuff like 3rd party on other vehicles etc

Re: Who do insure with?
Hmm, think I'll investigate the camper route see what quotes I get, also have a friend of a friend with a van he uses for work, apparently he gets 3rd party on other vehicles, I've yet to find out if this is correct

Re: Who do insure with?
ours is with Admiral but on a commercial/private use MPV with part work part private use PLG is private light goods a short wheel base single axle transit is in this class as well it may be worth having a hunt through the DVLA website to see if you an run a check and if it comes up wrong see how to get it changed.
Although it isn't unusual for the insurers to get it wrong I had a Polo CX and it took me ages to convince the insurers it even existed as the CX was a CL in dealer specified trim.

Re: Who do insure with?
I't must be the insurers getting it wrong as the dvla sent me registration docs and it is clearly a panel van on them, it always has been just don't know how to get the insurers to insure it correctly
Rich do you have driving other vehicles on your ins? That's my main problem here, I could have taken the van to get fixed at a garage I know is good and gives a van to drive while they are fixing it, but I would need my insurance to cover me, also been stuck in emergency situs a couple of times where I've needed to drive other cars,
One of the ins company's I phoned had the cheek to ask me why I want a van for private use saying "i dont understand why you would have a van and not a car, well it is unusual, are sure your not using it for business?" bloody cheek

Re: Who do insure with?
No i don't have other car use as I have an other car that is on a seperate policy so didn't need it
Re: Who do insure with?
I use NFU for my Hijet, car & motorcycle, Very fair rates on all 3, plus you can pay monthly,
and the only extra interest that they charge is about a fiver-for the year, not monthly or
weekly. They are very efficient if you have a prang & sort things out quickly.
I've had quotes off all the internet cowboys & none of 'em have ever beaten NFU!

Re: Who do insure with?
wow is that the time? forgot to phone insurance companys, got carried away making jewellery, a copper chain bracelet for a friend and a new silver ring for me, if i get my makers mark registered this year maybe ill be able to sell some then i wont have to wory about the cost of keeping this van running, i could pay somebody to respray properly it how i want it (although my mum used to spray cars, maybe i should ask her!)

Re: Who do insure with?
grrr, just been quoted £355 plus £85 for breakdown to insure as a camper fully comp, this does not cover me to drive other vehicles.... thats bloody ridiculous, i think its discrimination to say you cant get cover to drive other vehicles if its a van or camper AND we are going to charge you more for the privilage of that
if this is the type of quote ive got to look forward to then ill have no choice but to get rid of the van

Re: Who do insure with?
mm, yeah, then they label it as an mpv.. which it isnt.. which i think will invalidate the insurance?! .. however, looking at the dvla website they do say they list body type on the basis of the external look of the vehicle, so if i put some sliding doors on with widows im thinking that may be enough to chage it to an mpv?!

At 40 years old being a woman,I'd expect to be paying half that.
Just go on comparethemarket.com
You should get a quote of £220 at the most.
On the whole insurance companies don't like DIY camper conversions as they are a bit of a liability for catching fire and ending up on their roof due to weight issues.

Re: Who do insure with?
I'm on £500 excess as it's only to be paid under the fully comp sort of claim. If I crash my van I will either be my own fault into a hedge or a field one night driving like a fool, or someone else will crash into me. If they hit me they are paying from their insurance, while if I crash my own van into a tree one night I'll just scrap it and not claim.
Claiming on your own insurance for you own stupidity is retarded as your insurance will go up for the next 5 years, and on a hijet the max they'd pay out is like £700. If it went up by £150 for claiming, probably more as I'd lose all my no claims I'd be out of pocket in after a couple of years.
Part of me thinks about 3rd party fire and theft, but its no cheaper than fully comp on compare the market.
