Mot failures Empty Mot failures

Post by Brainsparks30 Mon Apr 11, 2011 6:37 pm

Just drove back from yorkshire in my 'new' 1997 1.0 hijet mpv. Not driven for some time when I collected. No obvious problems, but back in norfolk mot man says that the emmisions are high/fail and the rear brakes have no effort. I am thinking that a service would help, and I heard something about spraying WD40 onto the compensator valve? Does any one have any greater ideas?

Mot failures Empty Brake

it will help a little but take the linkage off and free it up, no need to undo the brake pipes

I am near Thetford (gladly not in it). I have some days left for a partial retest. It might be worth the trip next time round for full mot if they have better understanding.
Also, I noticed that my cat conv body is loose on its pipes so it can be rotated and slid to and fro, which is...weird. Like it has no welds on it. I am shure it is not gas tight. I am suspecting that this is could be to blame for the emmisions being high?

The linkage seems to be moving ok now but I am now thinking about how the valve inside might be siezed. Not shure what the normal unloaded position should be. The spring looks worn and weak strength. Is it possible to take valve apart to flush out any muck?

I've just had a complete pig of a job getting my van through the MOT due to no rear brakes. First off i'd whip the rear drums off and have a look. Chances are your wheel cylinders are seized. If you need some this was the cheapest place I found -

Mine also needed the compensator valve sorting.

ps i'm in Norwich so not far away

Thanks for the link, prices have varied wildly elsewhere but none were exactly cheap!
