Thermostat housing woes

Evening all,

So I've managed to snap the little plastic hose connector off the top of the thermostat housing... they're little buggers to get on and off!

Can't seem to find one on eBay, or anywhere... anyone got any idea of where to get one?

In all seriousness, you will find one somewhere, but they are getting thin on the ground.

I figured they must be getting rare, I've had two so far which have been brittle and cracked!

I think that they were around £45 + 20% vat plus postage.  
Last time I contacted them for on behalf of a customer was last October I think. Worth a phone call.
Worth putting their phone numbers in your contacts list. Woodford Motors also do or did METAL HANDLES for sliding doors. But they are pretty expensive.

Yeah, I got quoted £45 + VAT + delivery from the local Daihatsu garage (Catermoles Ipswich). Managed to get mine for £25 delivered off eBay, still seems a lot for a bit of plastic! I'd pay a lot more if someone decided to make a metal thermostat housing!

Metal door handles?! You know how to get people excited Woodie! I managed to fix mine with a hot glue gun, but we'll see just how long that holds...

Now that is a good thought.  Metal ones. But as for door handles, time will tell -- pretty soon I expect.
I never use either of my sliding door handles -- they both work. I always open them from the inside.


I have repaired the broken top of the Thermostat Housing in the past by drilling out the hole left by the snapped pipe and gluing in a modified brake bleeding  nipple. It was probably an old Ford one. I don't think I used a Daihatsu one.

I drilled the hole out in the nipple as large as the metal would allow and drilled right through the bottom of the tapered seating. I used Polyurethane adhesive to glue the nipple into the housing.
I sold the Pickup and never heard from the chap again. It is still on the road as I passed it yesterday parked in its usual place.

I was tempted to do something similar with mine, but didn't trust that it would hold, and only had the broken plastic one to glue back on.

I once worked in a place with a 3D printer capable of printing in metal... what I'd give to have access to that again!

I just can't get my head around how the hell they work. But no surprise there ---- I can't get my head round how to post pictures either --- before anyone jumps in with that one.

If someone has a 3D printer, then I can't see why not, could make a mint from us Hijet owners! they might not be as strong as injection moulded plastic parts, and might not have quite as good thermal properties (could melt, as they are bolted directly to the block...). If people can make guns with them though, I can't see why thermostat housings wouldn't work.

I did a degree with materials science in it, hence the printers, they basically just print in layers around 1mm thick at a time.

It is a possibility, may do a bit of googling around that! 3D printing is becomming more affordable and available to almost everyone now. We even talked about getting one for my Primary School, lots of secondary schools have them. Saw a program the other week where they 3D orinted some wheel centres from a golf or astra cant remember which that you cant get hold of these days.

Very interesting what you find on Google, anyone fancy sending me a broken one (with all bits) to see how easy it would be to creat a 3D model on the computer first. Done some 3D work before (van interior etc) but this would be an interesting project!

It would be a great project, I'm sure there is no end of hijet parts that would be great for printing! I destroyed my latest one in a fit of rage, but I'll see if I can dig out another one!

Make a mint? It wouldn't be much cheaper than to buy a proper genuine one for £45 than run it on a 3D printer. The typical low volume 3D printing plastic method is quite porous and softens up with heat.

I actually think £45 for that thermostat housing new, genuine, is very fairly priced. "Just a bit of plastic" well, you have to set up/make steel moulds, run the injection moulding machine, then the logistics of moving, packing and storing them. No body is making big money on them.

I agree with the point of cost, but an interesting project all the same to just create it in 3D.

Also there is a metal thermostat housing available.

You can use a sportrak 1.6 one. But you need a 90 degree rubber elbow, and a T piece to fit the little hose onto.

So if worse comes to the worse, there is an alternative solution there.
