Door inner panels

Hi People
I,m a bit confused, a few weeks back i completely striped the the inside of my Hijet camper to install sound deadening & thermal insulation ( all done now )I was surprised to find sliding door inner panels and all the panels in the back of the van are sheet steel quite heavy gauge fixed with self tappers rather than card, has anybody else come across this .
I have made new ones with good quality hard board just about to start and recover them.
