Hi there, anyone know where I can get a speedo cable for my piaggio porter '57. I popped into a jayar car parts today as I drove by & they told me that one does not exist. So if anyone can let me know if they have info as to where I can get one, off the shelf or if anyone has one going spare.
Thanks
Nikky

Second hand ones are pretty much impossible, because the brackets that hold the cable in place are always corroded so the cable always gets damaged during removal.

You can get a brand new cable made up, by your local cable company. I use a place called Cabletec http://www.cable-tec.co.uk/Products/Speedo_Tacho_Cables.asp

You just walk in with an old cable, and they make you something up that will fit, some times using some of the ends of the old cable if they are very unusual. Expect to pay about £50.

Thanks for that. I shall have a go at removing the cable to check length etc & see if I can find somewhere local to take it to. I hadn't thought of using a place like that....Obviously. My ex used to use one years ago in Watford, but since moving down here I've not needed anything like it so forgot they existed.
I don't think though that I have the end that fit sunder the van though as I think the green flag man chucked it on the floor in the carpark. (I called out green flag as the engine light had come on

....anyway as I was saying, I had to wait 2 hrs for green flag, then 2 hrs while a 12 year old so called mechanic tried to work out what was wrong. If I had realised a broken speedo cable was all it was I would have carried on my working day & earnt some money, better be safe than sorry when an engine light comes on though.

Is the end that fits on under the van likely to be a std fitting ?

I've tried pulling the cable through from the dash end but it doesn't budge. Guess there must be some sort of fastenings under the van.
Does anyone know how long the speedo cable is so I can get one made up ?
I took photos of the end that connects to the dash & of the socket it goes into as well as photos of the end other end that I recovered from the green flag chap

You can only remove it from the Gearbox end Penny as it is a pegged or single bayonet type of drive.
I have left you a reply on your other post about Piaggio Cable. Have a read and give me a call.

You haven't said what is wrong with your speedo/cable, or if you have I haven't seen it. As I mentioned in the earlier post if you cannot pull the cable out of the dashboard end then its unlikely to be broken. OK there is a chance that the outer cable is damaged as HJ said, and that water has got in and it has seized up and thus you can't pull the cable through, but I haven't come across that in a Hi-Jet - - yet.

It is also possible that the speedo drive in the end of the gearbox has stripped some of the nylon teeth but I haven't seen that in a Daihatsu Hi-Jet gearbox before, although it was a common occurrence in Ford gearboxes.

Hi there, the speedo cable is def broken as the end that goes into the gear box is on my coffee table. What happened was the engine light came on so & I noticed the speedo wasn't working. I called out green flag incase the engine light was a major fault. They came, plugged in their magic box that detected speedo problem. The guy got under the van, fumbled about & came out with the end of the speedo. Hence the end being on my coffee table. I tried putting a picture on here but it's ages since i put a picture on here & couldn't remember how to do it :-0
