Width of rims Empty Width of rims

Post by FrontBackSide2Side Mon Dec 02, 2013 7:09 am

I know the standard tyres are 155 80 12's but does anyone know is the width of the standard rim? Also im thinking about swapping to a 13" rim, does anyone know how wide you can get away with? The ones i am looking at are 7". I know they will protrude from the bodywork but i'm planning on fitting some arches to combat that problem.

Quite a few threads running, clearance with the front door can be an issue, and too wide at the back causes probs with a van with the sliding doors, not applicable here tho. Wink
PCD issues are well documented, where are you getting 7" rims that fit from?

Yes it was the front door issue or any other clearance issue on the front i was wondering about. I've read a lot of threads about wheels but non really mention how much of an issue the width is, they seem to concentrate on the diameter of the rim where 14" with the wrong tyres can be a problem. The 13" wheel/tyre combo i will be using will give the same rolling diameter as the standard wheels but obviously be a lot wider. If i can find out what width the standard wheels are i can work out some measurements to check for clearance hopefully.

The wheels i am after are aftermarket rims in a ford fitment so 108mm pcd -7et.

Pretty.sure theyre 4" or 4.5, HJ will know Wink
With that offset you're prob going to have big issues with clearance. Im on my phone just now but there's a site where you type in the old & new sizes to compare rolling radius & offsets.
If you've been looking then you will be aware of the issues with fitting wrong pcd wheels.

Yeah im planning to use the wobble nuts to get round the fitment issues.

I found that site which is why i wanted the rim width to be honest Laughing

I'll try it with both 4 and 4.5", thank you Smile

Wobble nuts don't exactly solve all the the fitment issues.

No centre spiggot plus wobble nuts is a less than ideal setup if you think about it!

Yeah you are probably right. I might get the rears redrilled to the proper pcd. Iis that an option? I'm presuming its just the drum?

But then you couldn't put a front rim on the rear when you are swapping tyres about. And to redrill you would have to drill the rear hubs, and the drums etc. You would also need 2 spare tyres!!

Ahhh the joy of Daihatsu's decision to use a dumbf*ck pcd Mad

But the joy when you actually come across proper fitment ones Smile

P.S I think Hijets steelies are 4J from memory.

And yes, having wheels that just fit, with real bolts and no nonsense is the real deal.

You would be able to swap wheels front to back, you would just need to make sure the wobble nuts stay on the front Smile

Width of rims Lenkro10

When making the wheels stick out on a car, the biggest factor your changing is the scrub radius, along with other more minor factors.

MacPherson strut type vehicles like the Hijet typically have a negative scrub radius, and you need to ensure it stays negative otherwise you will alter the stability, steering effort, grip, stress on the components and tyre loading.

If the scrub radius becomes 0, then the vehicle will have a great loss of stability, and the steering will wander constantly (like my pickup did when I bought it with Ford fitment wheels) needing constant correction. If you take your hands off the steering wheel the vehicle will cease to self centre.

There are other poor factors of a zero scrub radius, which cause cornering instability.

But I know nothing about steering geometry, and how they design it to make a car drive OK.

If you have the funds to buy new I would suggest you get some offset studs all round (just google offest wheel studs) which with a little care will solve the rear fitment properly and depending on what the wheels are the hub size is bigger than Fords so the centre hole stops the wheel going straight on unless it is a multi fit that needs spacer rings to obtain the correct fitment or the hubs need to be put up in a lathe and turned down like HJ has done.

The wheels on my van just fit, I have not altered the hubs.

The ones on my project van are Mazda wheels, and I have turned down the hubs to suit.

What my wheels are off, I do not know?! They were a bargain and worth travelling for.

I tried to fit some ford wheels as a get me by and could only get them on the back which did me over and I remembered you had turned some hubs down but had forgotten it was Ernie and mazda wheels.
