I have a sticking thermostat a 2004 1.3, never had a half fail before, sometimes it opens and other times not

Will have to change it but.......

can anybody recommend a replacement manufacturer, seems to be a large difference in replacement costs between manufacturers

I've used some of those blue print ones but I can honestly say they are crap, the difference between the two I bought is about 10 degrees.

The lower of the two I run in my daily driver.

The hotter one is the one that was in the red hijet that boiled up.

Yep, seems Im suffering the same thing. Brand new and only been in the van 2 weeks but noticed the other day it started to run hotter on the temp gauge.
A few good whacks on the engine cover directly above the housing will drop the temp needle down to halfway again and its fine.

So, a decent replacement required, is there a decent quality one out there?

Well you know how it is, everything is made in china or similar these days. Quality control is out the window when it come to exported brandless products that get put in boxes.

I think redweld/stopleak/steelseal products have an impact on making them bond closed so make sure if its had any in that its been flushed well. And on the same note a good strong mix of antifreeze will add non stick properties to the rubber.

Also, if you look closely at how a hijets coolant system is configured, if you have the heaters on closed, there is very little water getting to the thermostat on warm up. By keeping the heaters on hot mode your increasing the amount of hot water from the head to the thermostats actuator on the underside of it.

Thanks Matt, to be honest I havn't changed it but ran it solid tor the last 2 days for 8 hours each day none stop and it has been fine so not going to mess just yet, I have to have the heater on hot what ever the temp outside to aid keeping her cool, It will sit just under half way on the gauge can't wait to use the one with the Kenlowe fan fitted to see how it performs,
one thing I have found that I was going to mention as it could be advice to others
it did loose water overnight when it was cold, the colder it was the puddle got bigger, never lost or used water when it got warm, had to check the water every morning before I turned the key, the metal parts that hoses go onto shrink in the cold allowing water to get past the hose clips, never more than a egg cup full (most times a thimble full) but if it was parked outside you would never notice it on a damp/wet road or drive, fortunately I have use of the neighbours garage that has a dry floor, all clips have been nipped now

That one is rated for 88 degrees

When previously looking at thermostats, the various manufactures offered them at:-

Some are 84, some 82 and some 78 degrees.

I would try and get a 78 degree one as it'll be less prone to staying closed.

Well need to get it sorted by tomorrow as I am going on another mega trip friday.

Surrey to the euro tunnel and then on an hour from Paris and back in a day!

Reason being my eldest sons Astra coupe blew up over Easter in France, and the muppet never had breakdown cover Rolling Eyes
So need to get the scrap papers signed at the garage he was towed into.
Luckily one of my wifes friends is French and she has done us proud in sorting this mess out. Provided he gets it done Friday he wont pay any charges for storage etc.

So 420+ to Devon last Thursday and now another 450+ Friday Shocked

Oh, and I have breakdown cover for the day Laughing
