Re: 4x4 wanted
Hens teeth are those 4x4 ones!
Saw one for sale in italy not so long ago, it had a snow plough and studded tyres too. Maybe a bit far for you though?! Plus it was wrong hand drive.
I really hope you find one, good luck, one will turn up if you dig hard enough.

Re: 4x4 wanted
The front hubs on a 2wd one have like half a CV joint in them, as in on the inside of the hub it spins round as you drive. So you could if you were pretty handy with the metal either find a pair of front drive shafts and CV's off a 4x4 one, or maybe weld/machine something up to fix some UJ's to them. Getting the original bits would be hard work.
I'd ditch the daihatsu engine and box and fit something more chewy
Right i've found it, this guy has done a honda d16 powered 4x4 hijet

Re: 4x4 wanted
That could certainly work, about the right size too.
My mates dad has a seriously chewy SJ, forget your typical joey off roader, this thing has taken years to build full time in his workshop as he's a retired engineer. Fiddle brakes, seamless steel tube external cage, carbon fibre cab roof, all sorts of beautiful creations when you start looking. Top speed of about 45 mph, but will crawl through and up anything.

Re: 4x4 wanted
In italy you can fnd some, but at high price.
I bought mine (a 1998 1.0 injected one) for 3900€, but it isn't a pickup.
I find some pickup, but all of them had over 80/90'000km or the less used have price over 8000€.
However searched only betveen the 1.0 ones, because the 1.3 haven't the low range gear, and I need it to come down the scanuppia without using too much the brakes.
I remember that it is less difficult to find 1.3 4x4 ones.
