Diesel fuel pump repair Empty Diesel fuel pump repair

Post by hijetx2 Fri Aug 31, 2012 9:06 am

my diesel pump was leaking from the rear where it sits on 2 bolts coming out of the block.

ive removed it and cleaned it up... it should have a rubber "O Ring" that is not there so ive made it out of silicone and have made a cardboard gasket.(o ring is a dealer part that comes with the fuel pump)

when i re-attach it im going to use gasket sealant on both sides.

Thought id post pictures here to help anyone in the future.

Wonder if it will seal? Only one way to find out!

Good luck, and I'm sure some other rare diesel hijet owner will appreciate this one day.

If it doesn't seal then you can use a normal round O-ring all you need to know is how deep is the groove not wide and then find an O-ring that diameter and see if you can find one long enough to sit in may need a bit of grease or hylamar to hold it in and if you can't find one the right length then get a longer one and cut it clean square through and then feed it in to get the length and then cut it to suit and superglue the ends carefully together and bobs your uncle. You used to be able to get O-ring kits which was the rubber cord and a tube of superglue.

All that is if you need to change what you have hopefully it will work fine the only thing I can see maybe an issue is if the thickness of your gasket means the pushrod doesn't quite push far enough but I can't see it being that critical.

Thanks for the comments rich, highlyjetted..

I put it back on it it sealed fine. However it started spitting fuel out of the tiny breather holes in the nylon ring inbetween the two sides of the diaphragm.
I've had to take it off again.
When I first cleaned it after removal, it was covered in sealant, including those 2 holes.
Upon opening it - the diaphragm is shot in the middle.
So I'm going to try and source a new pump.
I'll post some pics later.
I've rung that dealer movoco or something like that.(the ask for ken one- he's retired lol)
They are going to get back to me.
There's a few places to try. (the guy in Ireland) someone posted in April on this forum too that they were breaking one.
I'd hoped I could make the membrane(I've done it before on boat engines) but I've got no hope with this one -it's double sided..

Awww man what a pain in the arse.

That pump must have been wasting derv, and not supplying the proper pressure etc.

Wouldn't be surprised if this is a common fault on these.

Good luck on the hunt, one will turn up.

If you can find out/work out the required pressure you may have more luck converting to a electric pump.

See how it is when it gets delivered, fingers crossed.

That pump design is very 1970's, you would have thought they'd make something with more longevity than that really.
