Hello there! New van, new adventure!

Hi everyone! I’m sure I introduced myself in the correct section but I can’t seem to find that now. So, my name’s Leo, I like trees and I live in the midlands, so hello!    I’ve been meaning to post up ever since buying a lovely van from the lovely man Brisoljet about a month ago, time flies eh! The plan for the van is to semi-convert it to a mini-camper, with minimal major work and to travel around scandanvia in it!

So if you are familiar with that thread you may be thinking I’m the silly billy who would shell out for an over-heating van knowingly!

Anyway....
Me and my brother had a bit of an adventure getting the van home, i’ll let the pictures do the talking!





You can see we didn’t drive it home as intended because it started getting hot and felt like risky biscuits!




It’s now sat on my drive half assembled, to evaluate the overheating thing so far we have determined:
-It’s not the coolant pump (as the RAC man thought (anyone wanna buy a new one? )).
-It could be the thermostat – the old one didn’t open at 82°C, so iv’e replaced it!

At the moment we suspect:
- It may be caused by an airlock somewhere.
- Possibly an airlock previously around the thermostat (although it was in the right way round).
And that’s where we are with it!
By the way, the radiator inlet hose was warm while it ran, but the outlet was cold, indicating an airlock/blockage there. So one next step is to flush the rad.
I’m also after a new thermostat housing because I broke the old one taking it off    my bad! Anyone selling one or know where I can get one?

Also I have a small query about this certain sensor. I’m guessing it’s the rad fan switch but i can’t find the cable and plug anywhere! Can anyone shed some light on the subject?

Hi welcome, HJ or Woody for parts, might be an idea to take it to HJ and get it fixed proper.

When we are talking Hijet thermostats, there are 1 type to 100% avoid like the plague...

Circoli ones from eurocarparts etc.

They are total dog shit, I have tried them a couple of times and they are not consistent or stable.

I only fit Nippart thermostats, I used to just Unipart and order them, but since unipart have gone bust I had big problems buying them in the UK, so I tried a few alternatives including the Circoli ones once again, but I was happy with non of them really and all I wanted was a Nippart thermostat!!

So I found a main nipparts distributor in holland, but there was a 200 euro minimum order requirement..... so I bought 200 euros worth of thermostats!!! I have a box full of them in my Unit.

As regard to thermostats, the new one i fitted is a Firstline one, which is offset from the center and looks different to the ones you sell Matt. I forgot to mention, when we collected the van the first thing we did was put two new rad caps on, the type you recommend in your guide.

So, any pointers of where I should find the wire that plugs in this?

I'm guessing it's important!

Thermostat housings seem pretty rare too, wish i hadn't broken it!

Aww man, you popped your thermostat housing sooner or later the world will run out of them because people bust them.

That plug/wire, may not be applicable, as you will have the temp sensor in the bottom coolant pipe that runs under the passenger footwell.

Logi - they were the ultra small ones for the Asian market.

Self promotion??  Cobblers.  That is is helping out all Forum members and I will certainly be in touch for some Thermostats and Radcaps.

I reckon you'd have been fine if you hadn't stopped for food Leo! Oh well...

I really hope you get the overheating sorted. BTW, an AA guy also told me it was the water pump but when I had it tested it was fine!

Just from your photo above, I can tell its been over heating for a while, and its been messed with.

The previous owner knew it over heated for sure.

If its been over heated a few times, which it will have, I would just commit to the project properly, not waste your time and mean business.

Take the head off, get it skimmed, pressure tested etc

Put a new radiator on it.

Check the pipes for corrosion.

New thermostat, new caps.

Wash everything out.

New hose clips every where.

Build it up proper nice, pressure test it.

When its air tight, fill it up properly, and enjoy a working hijet.

You can waste easily way more time and money mucking about.

Balls HJ. Wish i'd known that you sell the thermostats, just bought one from Daihatsu. With a discount it was £50! Just going through the cooling system on mine at the moment, when I get to the radiator if its not clean and tidy then at least I now know you have new ones.

Hi guys and gals!

Good news on the Hijet front.

In summery, since last posting on here, I flushed the Rad and Engine, replaced the thermostat housing and thermostat and bled it thoroughly (as per Matts specialist watering can directions)

And it worked a treat! I now have a fully working happily running Hijet

Here's some pics!







Its first proper test run was up to near leeds and back, a near 300 mile round trip, and it didn't miss a heartbeat! Well chuffed!

Next to fit a minimalist interior, anyone know if swivel basses are available for our little vans?
