Head Bolts Empty Head Bolts

Post by Eightpot Fri Oct 24, 2014 2:51 pm

My cylinder head is currently in the machine shop being pressure tested for any internal cracks after being found to be un-warped after the little drama n the hard sgoulder of the M3. Phew. But he did raise an eybrow when I told him that as far as I was aware, the engine doesn't use stretch bolts.

Rapid question:

The head bolts. Are they stretch bolts or regular?

Ta in advance.

The manual makes no reference to replacing the bolts on strip/rebuild also the diagram doesn't label it as a non-reusable part (or at all even!)

I always re use them, and I always skim the head as they warp in very funny ways I cant measure, but you can see it as its skimmed pass by pass.

Thanks for that. The primary cause of failure on my engine is increasingly looking like the head bolts were insufficiently torqued down followed by a dodgy jubilee clip on the thermostat housing. Need to look at the accuracy of my torque wwrench...

Interestingly, I did notice when putting a staight edge over the deck of the block, that the steel liners stood proud of the aluminium.
