Help please Update new van

Right sorted the battery checked cam belt and all obvious things,, put key in the ignition (crossed fingers lol ) flicked the key and…clunk 
sounded like a starter motor problem so I have taken it off and im thinking put it across the battery what do you all think ? ohhhhhhhh while I was under I noticed a bracket that was not attached (have put pic of the bracket as a profile picture for now ) what is it please ..
