Sidelights? Empty Sidelights?

Post by craig2859 Wed Jan 08, 2014 5:17 pm

I am thinking of swapping out my sidelights for LED T10 replacements.

Reason being I have just upgraded my Headlights to these:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-100w-Super-White-H7-Xenon-HID-High-Main-Beam-Headlight-Bulbs-477-499-/290663244141?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item43ace1216d

Which I have to say makes a huge difference on the dark lanes I drive down on my way fishing.

However my Side lights look really old and yellow now, so going to swap to LED T10'S in white of course, has anyone tried this at all, also if I get a pack of them, can I swap out the indicators and tail lights - are they T10 also?

Ive done it on other cars and it works quite well. I don't know what bulbs the indicators take but if you replace them with LED's you will need to add a resistor in parallel else they will flash too fast. You can buy led bulbs with the resistor built in but these are a lot more expensive than the normal T10 LED's.

*Edit- Just to add, now you have added 100w bulbs you will need to be very careful with the headlight wiring and connectors. The bulbs will be drawing more power now and in some cars the standard wiring and connectors aren't up to the job. Saying that i have done the same in the past (on other cars) and had no trouble.

"*Road Legal: These bulbs are NOT road legal"

They will as already said, cause the wiring to melt if kept on main beam for long periods, and they will burn out the relay.

I know this because I have had them in previous vehicles with "mixed success"!!

The other problem on a late model hijet - which I'm not sure yours is - is the inner reflectors are made out of plastic and they too will discolour and distort with the heat.

But yes they are very very very good!! Bright as fook! Totally flood light the road in front of you.

On one of my old cars, they causes the fuse to pop a couple of times, so I uprated the fuse, then one night on my way back from sheffield over the peak district in the dark valleys - 2am in the morning, I was driving with my main beam on for ages, very spirited driving, as there were no cars at all, and as I came down one of the twisty bits all my head lights except side lights totally died. My main lighting relay was toasted, melted plastic all over the fuse box under the bonnet. Had to get a mate to meet me so I could follow him back. Since then I've stayed on standard bulbs.

Oops, I may have to have a rethink then !!!

Just read a few things on this and it seems not a good call, standard Headlights going back in tomorrow I think, not worth it.

If you want some good bulbs Osram nightbreaker plus are rated highly and give that more moden looking white light. They are quite expensive though. If you decide to go with them make sure you go for the "plus" version as they do a standard osram nightbreaker bulb too.

Also if they are a HID then there should have been some extra wiring and a ballast box and if they are a HID they are illegal when retro fitted unless headlight washers are fitted as HID dazzle as the dirt can deflect the light.

Not only that, they need to use specially designed E marked light units and be self levelling so its almost impossible to retrofit HID's legally unless they did it as a factory option on your particular car.

These bulbs arent HID's though, they have just put that in the title to help get them on more search results.

I'd like to know how you managed to fit H7 bulbs to an H4 headlamp! However, they are also main beam only so you have no means of dipping and will therefore blind any oncoming drivers especially at 100W output.

I hope you don't come anywhere near me!

Thanks for all the kind words guys !!!

They are H4 bulbs
They are not HID's, and I am fully aware of retrofitting these and the legality
The link is not the exact ones I got but the same brand if you like with dual filaments for low/high beam.
The where removed within 24hrs and never used because of this.

I am not some dumb ass boy racer who drives around in a souped up corsa with Xenon lights blinding other road users, so please don't talk to me as such!

Thanks

Trust me it is the same for me also, however I think the wife thought they would be handy after I complained of the crappy headlights down dark lanes when off fishing.  Smile

I'm on the look out for a couple of pairs of the rectangular spot lights that are going extreemly cheap as I have an odd roof bar that fits nicely across the roof just above the windscreen and I'll make up a light bar just for the winter.

Just like the top bit only I live on the edge of farm land and it's all back roads to and from work. Which reminds me off to a new thread.
