Breaking P reg 993cc Efi Hijet
Ok, sad to say this, but my little steed is deceased. Head gasket went and after taking the engine apart and looking at it's other problems, such as rust and chronic overheating, as well as it still drinking oil like it's going out of fashion, I decided to call it a day. So I have a van being broken for parts, most of the parts are available for sale, just tell me what you're after and I'll get it sorted. As I sell items I will make a list in this post of what's been sold, so you know exactly what is and isn't available. If it's on the list, it's gone.
I also have a brand new timing tension pulley spring and gasket set for the 993cc CB42 Efi if anyone wants these items.
It's a black panel van, and I'm based near Llandysul, Carmarthenshire if anyone is near.
Broken:
N/S sliding door handle broken.
O/S door mirror broken
Sold:
N/S door mirror
Fuel cap
One lockstick cover
O/S indicator/sidelight block
Clutch and brake pedal covers

Re: Breaking P reg 993cc Efi Hijet
Hello,
sorry for the loss of your beloved car, hope you will find another one
I need some parts but I don't know if they will fit the model I own ? Mine is a S85-LPTRMDP (1.2D pick-up from 1996).
What I need so far (maybe more to come) is :
- the fuel cap
- rubber pad for clutch and brake pedals (the one missing on brake is a problem for the french equivalent of MOT)
- front right blinker glass block (don't know the english word for this)
- one of those tiny plastic sticks to lock the door
- wing mirror if still not flappy
Please let me know if this is available and if you would ship to France.
cheers,
Luc

Re: Breaking P reg 993cc Efi Hijet
Well, I have already replaced it with an S reg Golf in very nice condition, which for my life at the moment is exactly what I need. Times have changed for me since I got Bod (after the number plate) and a car with a bit more style for my age group is what I need. Besides, bod is bloody uncomfortable on long journeys...

"Style" What are you on about man,
Hijet turns more heads than anything else on the road.
They are just too cool for school

Most of the heads over here turn and look at my Hi-Jet too HJ.---- usually in
amazement as I dare to overtake them in a vehicle not much bigger than a
postage stamp. Love it !!

I know what you mean, and I agree they have their own style, and I may well get one again in a few years, but right now I'm better off with just a car.

Re: Breaking P reg 993cc Efi Hijet
I think a load of cars on the a34 on my way home tonight got the hijet suprise.
Following a long tailback of cars doing 45 on the A road,
I back off a bit before some complex corners,
Take my run up to get to a damn good speed,
Then ripped past the whole tail back taking the lead into some tight corners with the tyres screaming.
I often wonder what people must think!

Re: Breaking P reg 993cc Efi Hijet
Its going to be much more fun Matt with 1600 engines in our respective beasts.
I have decided to put it in the 05 plate Pickup with a tipper body.
The bonus is access to everything under the lift up bed and better access to
the rear of the engine too.

Re: Breaking P reg 993cc Efi Hijet
I much prefer working on vans than pickups.
Least in a van the whole engine is in front of you once you get the covers off.
Working on pickups is a bit of some stuff inside, some stuff outside, leaning in though the doors.
While in a van you can keep tools and stuff on the dash and on the floor and work dry even if its raining.
Speaking of 1.6 Hijets, I might have some good news about the pistons and rod issues to get the compression up, but I'll know more on tuesday. The engine building guy I use thinks the rods are the same so you might not have to change them over, simply keep the 1.3 pistons and rods and chuck them in the 1.6 block/crank

Re: Breaking P reg 993cc Efi Hijet
Yes it is more handy to have a van in the winter especially for me
with all the power tools I carry about on various kinds of jobs.
But I do find the pickup more fun to drive as you can really make them
slide and hang the tail out.
Access issues I certainly agree with that. That's why I am going
to use the tipper bodied one.
I have got a beheaded 1300 lump in the store so will look at it in the
morning-- oh it is morning now. I haven't taken any notice of the piston
crowns before. If fitting 1300 pistons increase the CR then
presumably they are hemi ones and must be a higher profile than
the 1600 ones.

Re: Breaking P reg 993cc Efi Hijet
Yes 1300 pistons have protuding crowns while the 1600 ones are pretty much flat. Compression ratios go like this (taken from an Diahard the aussie Daihatsu website):-
1.3 HC-E: 9.5:1
1.6 HD-E: 9.5:1
1.5 HE-E: 9.5:1
Theoretical hybrid compression ratios:-
1.6 HD crank/block with 1.3 HC pistons: 11.06:1
1.3 HC crank/block with 1.6 HD pistons: 7.83:1
1.3 HC-E: 9.5:1
1.6 HD-E: 9.5:1
1.5 HE-E: 9.5:1
Theoretical hybrid compression ratios:-
1.6 HD crank/block with 1.3 HC pistons: 11.06:1
1.3 HC crank/block with 1.6 HD pistons: 7.83:1

Yep, it did indeed. Also where I originally came from. No more hijet posts from me for this beastie I'm afraid, Though I'll stick around a bit and try and help others if I can.woody wrote:So no more posts from you then ? Bod. So it came from Devon in the

Re: Breaking P reg 993cc Efi Hijet
I've sold a couple of sets of track arms complete because of this problem.
You can change over to the more common type which is the bar is a hollow threaded tube, and the track rods have a threaded shaft

Re: Breaking P reg 993cc Efi Hijet
If they are original they should be right as long as they are not too worn..

Re: Breaking P reg 993cc Efi Hijet
Hi. My 993 failed its MOT on rear brakes yesterday,(didn't register on the gauge). I'm on a tight timescale due to a charity trip to Rome on the 19th so I'm taking a guess it might be the load compensating valve and trying to obtain one before the garage strip it down.
If you have one available please could you let me know price and postage. Cheers Buzz

Go to the van with a mate or assistant.
Crawl under the back of the van.
Is the arm on the lspv free to move? If no get it moving by wire brushing the pivot off, and wd-40, and keep moving it until properly free.
If the arm is free - push the arm against the valve block - get mate to press brake pedal - can you feel it push the arm back a little bit?
If you can feel it push back then the valve is OK. But the spring is probably worn out.
If the arm does not push back, flip the arm out of the way, take the rubber off the LSPV, clean out the grease or rust, spray it inside with some penatration oil, tap the centre pin with a hammer, then get your make to press the brake pedal really hard. If you can get that centre pin moving again then is OK.
Jack up the rear axle so the wheels are off the ground.
Push the arm against the valve - Get your mate to press the brake pedal - spin the rear wheel - Do the brake work?
Normally they will now the lever is pressed.
Go to an engineering company to buy a suitable spring, adjust the arm to the max via the bottom bolt on the axle - go and pass the MOT.
Replacing the LSPV is a bit of an arse as the brake pipes will tend to get damaged and the brakes will need a full re-bleed.
Re: Breaking P reg 993cc Efi Hijet
Thanks HJ. Will print this off and take it to garage.
