Hi All. Should I get One???? Empty Hi All. Should I get One????

Post by Guest Fri Dec 04, 2009 7:17 pm

Hi all.
Just joined this site, as I was finding it hard to get advice/info about getting a Hijet. I am going to look at one 2moz (Sat 5th Dec). If you put in Hijet in ebay its on there for a buy it now of 300 quid?? Does that sound a good price. 56000mile, no mot or tax but looks ok from pics.
So hence me coming on here. I am after any advice on what to look out for from an mot point of view and also any general common faults that could be an issue.

Generally i am getting for a house refurb im about to start, just general waste no major loads/rubble. The house was a repo so there is alot of junk and rubbish that i have to take to the dump. Thats the reason ive given the wife but I do quite like the look of it too!! Very Happy
Any advice would be great.
Cheers
Jay.

Hey Jay

Same reason I got mine, bought a house to sort out! Its blody fantastic, mines a 1.3 mpv one with rear side windows and its been great for getting rid of rubbish, rubble, blocks and all sorts. I've got a roof rack too so I can collect plaster board and timber etc, everything goes in or on the hijet. They are almost perfect for the diy builder on a budget. Briliant for moving house too. I've had about a ton of rubble in the back a couple of times and it survived. Very narrow for fitting between houses and will drive through a fence pannel gap no probs. I've had my 3 seater reclining sofa in the back sticking out a bit but all was good.

Biggest flaw: Check for rust under the wheel arches as they rot really badly. It'll cost more than its worth to get it welded if your not DIY.

Also quite common for head gasket/over heating problems so get it upto temp and let it tickover for a while to see if it boils up. This will probally cost more than its worth to fix if its overheating.

Seen a couple of oil burners too, ragged to death and ran dry. Often these little vans get neglected and unloved.

Rear sliding door runners go a bit rough but they work with force and grease. Rebuild kits on ebay for £20.

If its not got rear side windows its classed as a van at the tip so they will want to see a tip permit from your local council, bit like a trailer permit.

Squeeky fan belt and rough starting on cold wet mornings tends to be common but just from lack of servicing! Dizzy cap, rotor arm and plugs. New belt and/or re-tension

Good luck and hope you get hijetting, they are wicked to drive being light and RWD Smile 1.3 goes pretty damn well but don't know for the other engine sizes. I love mine as much as my old CRX, or Charade GTti.

Great, thats just the sort of info i was after. Thanks for that.

Like i said im looking at it today and if it looks half decent and isnt going to cost the earth to get a ticket on i will buy it.
Ive been looking at various vans from escorts, citreons to transits. But to be honest they are so boring, i know its only a van but it needs to be fun to drive and a little quirky aswell.

I bought a old citreon 2cv a couple of months ago just for a laugh and as a little project and it was great fun to drive. Ive just sold that on ebay due needing a van for the house refurb so im up for the mickey taking from my mates that will be sure to follow when they see my latest purchase.

I will let you know how i get on today and if i become a full blown Hijet member.

Cheers again
Jay

Hijets are much better to live with over a proper van (e.g. sprinter, ducato, boxer, transit) because it has about half the fuel consuption, twice the performance and its not a pain to find somewhere to park it.

Also you get a lot better machine for your money, with a grand in your pocket you would get either a sprinter with 300,000 miles on the clock thats will go wrong and cost alot of money OR a rotten to nothing noisey smokey transit pikey machine... or you can get a low milage clean hijet 1.3 pocket rocket - I think the MPV version probally gets looked after better on average. A hijet goes for a normal MOT where some of the vans need a class VII mot due to being 3.0-3.5 ton payload.

Tyres a much much cheaper, as are brake pads and other consumables than van stuff. Cheap road tax too. I've had to live around a sprinter and a ducatto previously and they dont half feel big/sluggish. The hijet feels more like driving a hatchback. I hammer mine down country lanes keeping up with boy racers in their saxo's and peugeots, you can see the look of suprise from their mates in the back looking out the rear window - laughing!

I'm quite tall so I did find the cab space a bit tight, so i've redrilled the seat runners further back, cut the gear stick down and ditched the centre console. Windy days can be a bit scary with the lack of weight and tall flat sides! Especially at speed on the motorway pale Owning a 2CV you should be used to this sort of fear.

i avoid open roads on windy days! glad there are several back roads to pick from to/from work.

i bought my wee Hijet a year ago. 993 EFI 1997 £600 26,000 on the clock, its a MPV version that had all the seats removed, very good bodywork (when i bought it), i have noticed rust spots showing up now and do plan to get it treated/coated. i only use mine for now and then commute + load when ever some one needs it or pull a light motorcycle trailer.
since i've had mine i have tinted the windows with mirror silver to add security to anything left in the back, i have also sourced a full set of rear seats and fit them in as and when i need them, but normally the back is empty to use as a van.
i love the chop off nose as i can get closer to junction lines and see further down the road to pull out.

Sorry its taken so long to get back to you.
Well after arranging a viewing time with the guy and travelling 45mins and then trying to find the guys house in the middle of the Norfolk countryside, I arrived. Now has anyone ever seen the movie "Deliverance" starring Burt Reynolds?? Well this was just like that. If you havnt seen it in brief its about a group of 4 men who go on a hunting trip in the deep south of USA. Now when they are there they meet the locals who live in a small community and are all inbreed, getting the picture!! Any way its a good movie and if you get a chance watch it.

Back to the house, village and Hijet of course. First of all there was a massive gate to get into the "yard" with a sign saying, warning risk of death, gods honest truth. I did venture in and there was loads of motorbikes, motorbike parts, tools, old sheds, a weight training area and crap everywhere. Then there was the little Hijet tucked between 2 sheds, crammed full of more crap/parts, push bikes and motorbikes leaning against it. To be fair it didnt look in to bad a state, so I bite the bullet and knock on the door. Then all hell broke loose, i dont know how many dogs were in the house but there sounded like 6-7. Again i waited for a bit thinking that the noise would have woken the dead but there was no answer at the door, i knocked again, dogs barked again, waited 5 mins, then got the hell out of there. So all in all a great days work. Not. When i was in the safety of my own home i sent him an email, saying thanks mate, i turned up knocked and waited, then left. He replied saying he was in bed and couldnt be bothered to get out but do i want to come back and have a look again!!!
Thats is a real true story i havent made any of it up, what a idiot.

Anyway after that ive been looking about and i am pleased to say that this Sat i pick up a preg, 993cc, full mot, 60k, full service history, totally rust free Hijet for 500quid, happy chappie.

Will let you know how it all works out, dont forget watch that movie, if you have seen it the only thing missing was the Banjo playing.

Cheers
Jay Very Happy

You'll find some manuals for your Hijet in the workshop section.

no need to watch the film...... i am a stones throw away from NAAARRRRFUCK!
and yes, inbred load of weirdness, your very lucky that you got away mate.. new DNA to the gene pool.

i was going to ask you where it was due to the mention of Motorcycle parts, but if he cant be arsed to get out of bed to answer a door, would he be arsed to send parts out!

glad you have found a nice one, they are around...

That reply was well worth the wait! You could have ended up spending the rest of your life as a gimp, locked in the back of the hijet with a gearknob gaffer taped in your month.

Good luck on the next one, hopefully theres not as many dawgs guarding this one.

Post by Guest Tue Dec 15, 2009 8:09 am

Hi all again. Well pleased to say that i bought the little hijet i went to look at sat and its great. Its a 993cc, P reg, 60000miles and service history. A added bonus is that after going through all the reciepts/paperwork that came with it ive found a reciept from a Daihatsu main dealer for a full engine rebuild, pistons, valves, rings, all seals and gasket, timing belt etc the reciept is for 1200 pounds and was only done 1000 miles ago!!!! reading between the lines of the old bills etc I think that at some point someone didnt bother to get the timing belt changed when they should and it must of snapped. So the moral of the story is if yours is due to be changed or you have no record of it being changed GET IT DONE ASAP!
I do this on all the vehichles i get anyway unless there is a good record of it being done even if its not due. One other quick question, has anyone had a prob with fuel gauges working intermitantlly?? I havnt even had a look but sometimes it works fine then others not at all, it must be a loose connection somewhere like i say i havnt had a look yet.

Just a quick post today, will keep in touch again soon.
Cheers all.

Congratulations on the new Jet, hope you have lots of good times together.

Chaz has had a problem with his fuel gauge and speedo, his looks a bit different but its just a hijet in fancy dress https://hijet.forumotion.com/hijet-workshop-section-f3/oh-dear-t36.htm
