Hijet pick-up woodbed project

I think it is time for another update. To bad it is slow progress... but putting filler on the car and sanding takes a lot of time. The front end is getting shape and the roof, that was a drinking pool for the birds when i bought it, is becoming a bit more flat. The rear side of the cabin is just to dented, getting this right will take me at least another month. So I will try to fix the worst damages, and leave the rest. This week I will continue with sanding and hopefully I will be able to put on a coat of primer by the end of next week.

I also went to a scrapyard to find more parts for my Hijet. I found an extra reversing light that I had plans for. I've notice that the reversing light and the fog light are both 21W.
And the rear bumper has already a shape on the right with the same size as the hole for the reversing light is on the left. I didn't want to mount an extra fog light underneath the car as it usually has, so I tried to copy the hole from the reversing light on the right side.

To make the extra reversing light look red, I've used a color filter. This is the same material they use in the theaters. If they can withstand the heat of a 500W lamp, than the 21W light bulb shouldn't be an issue. Check out the pictures for the result:

Yes, a lot of after market head lights for the VW Golf! Also a reason why I choose them. If one breaks it's easy to replace. I looked up some original ones, because I didn't want a modern look. I will take some measurements this evening. Hope they fit without reconstructing the whole front like I needed to do

I want the metal frame on the back, the hinges, and the metal strips that hold the wood in to place to be colored black. Maybe a friend of mine can get them powder coated for 2 cases of beer. I will probably know that by the end of this week. Still thinking about green for the cabin. I found these 2 colors that I liked:



One is a bit old machine green and the other is a darker green. They look a bit different on the photo, but you get the idea. Then I still need to figure out if it will be high gloss or if it will be a semi satin finish. And do I also paint the bumper, or leave it black...

A lot of choices to make!

Excellent work? That must be a compliment coming from the one who created the 'Skylark'. I'm really impressed by your creation and I can see that you take the time to get all the details right. Thumps up for you Raggy!

I know that I have to take the time. But I also set my goal to get it on the road by the end of June. Don't have a lot of free in July. I'm now putting as much free time as possible into the project. Lately I start my job at 6.30 instead of 8.00, so I can go home earlier to continue with the car. My father is also putting more of his time into the project, so hopefully we will get it done by the end of June.

A small update.
Yesterday continued with filling and sanding. But also the number plate lightning is modified. The old ones were sticking out to far, so the created cover couldn't open far enough. At least keeping it like this would end up in breaking the number plate lightning eventually. That is why we modified it. I got some lights from a Nissan Micra and we created a protective cover. Now they are much smaller and better protected. This is the result:

Excellent yet again! Keep it going. Got to have mine ready for beggining of July to go away in so was going to do seats and curtains myself but have farmed those jobs out. Its good you have a garage to do that kind of work in, mine just wont fit in mine so tackling any job like you are doing wouldnt be much fun...or practical with the weather we are having at the minute. I'd end up with more rust than I started with!

The diameter is 18cm and they are 10.5cm deep. (more ore less)
Do you think it will fit? What are the dimensions from the carry?

Ok.. I had set my goal to finish the car the end of June / begin of July. But forget about that. I've got a letter that I have to get MOT before June 23! So I will take some more holiday after next week. For now I'm working almost every evening on my car and in the weekend.

At least the sanding is finally done. We cleaned the garage and created a spray cabin. Yesterday the Cabin of the Hijet got a coat of primer. Now I can finally see if I did a good job with the filler only a view tiny places I need to give some attention, but I'm very pleased with the result. Today I'll try to leave early from work so I can get some color for the car. Making the decision for the color is REALLY though! I was thinking about a dark green (more British racing green) or a light green. Something between olive green and grass green). I think I will go for the lighter one. But will make the final decision this afternoon! Here are some pictures of the progress so far:

After 2 very hard weeks of working at the job and every evening on the car I have only slow progress. It is one step forward 2 steps back.. At least that is how it feels.
After putting on the primer I've discovered some more places that needed attention. So I took out the filler and grinding paper and continued with that. When that was all done, we prepared it for the paint. But also that turned out not exactly as it should be. I don't have temperature and humidity regulation so the weather is a big influence in the result. Luckily in the place were I live the rain was limited compered to the rest of Holland. Although we had to do some things twice for a acceptable result. Yesterday we have sprayed the outside of the cabin (the most important part) and there fell a weight of my shoulders when I looked at the result. Only later when the paint dried I discovered that at some places the paint was just to thin. So I'm going to get more paint and do the cabin all over again :S Not so nice considering my tight planning! And to make things worse I've double checked the doors from the day before and also they have some places were the paint is just to thin. So I need to do those also again!

I managed to pic a old color out of a book with thousands of colors. It is VW taiga green. Olive green in the shade, but nice and bright in the full sun.

Yet again, excellent job. Don't knock yourself, its not an easy job balancing work and renovations. Dont think people realise how long jobs take, didnt think I would still be at it 9months later!

Paint prep takes a while, if it doesn't you end up with a shitty finish, the time and effort is paying off with the finished article.

I feel to tired to write, but I want te keep you guys a little up to date...

This week I've took some holiday to work on the car. My dad and I work from the morning to the evening almost none stop! But the result is there. Monday we repainted the cabin and on Tuesday we did the doors again. Discovered that there was also not enough paint on some places. After that it we could start putting things back together. The biggest puzzle I've made

But before putting parts back on the car we needed to clean everything and a lot of things needed some new paint. Also gave the interior a make over with a spraycan of plastic primer and some semi gloss black. I know it very vulnerable for scratches, but I will do the interior later and this is just to see what the color black does for the car.

I made new cables for the lights and put some tectyl body wax on the chassis. Put everyting from the backside back and picked up the metal frame that was sandbalsted and painted.

As you can hear, I'm keeping my story short. And don't go into detail. I will post some pics to do the talking for me. Then I go straight to bed! (after I finish my beer)

Forgot a picture form the front Perhaps a new update tomorrow. I think it will be able to drive on Sunday! So this project is in fith gear

Gob smacked! And I thought I had restored mine Absoluetly cracking job there, very impressed, you have to be very proud of yourself to have done so much, that beer is very well deserved. Make sure you father gets one as well! Excellent!
