smart seats - Fitting Smart car seats.... Empty Fitting Smart car seats....

Having a bit of a war with this. Because of the distance between the holes on the Smart seat runners, I can't see how to fit them, or at least, it's very marginal. The length is such that they'd be right in the corner of the engine cover. Am I missing something?

I suppose I could drill the seat rails, so the mounts are closer together....

If you look closely at the smart car seat runners you will notice the drivers side and passenger side are different.

This is free style seat fitting, I'm sure if Logi shows you where he has bolted his down it will be different from my choice.

I used some bolts that I ground the heads down a bit thinner so the runners don't catch against them.

I also think I may have drilled new holes in the runner for the rear bolts to go through on the drivers side, but I can't remember now.

Black dots on the silver foil tape are the original holes.

Ok, I'm overthinking it. Need to make with the drill. If I get clever with where I chose to redrill the drivers side rails, I can get a bit more legroom (which is nice when you're 6'3!)

where mine is drilled I get LOADS of extra legroom as the smart car runners go really far back.

Beware of siting them too far back, remember the seats need to tip back so if the runners sit too far back on the engine covers they will catch when you tip them back.
I'll need to take pics of mine.

I got the driver's side fitted, with reasonable success. Much more comfortable, but a little higher (I'm 6'3, and now very effectively shaded from the sun), and also a little further forward. I'm wondering about redrilling and moving it back, but my main concern is having rails jutting into the rear cabin that could really muller someone's knees in case of an accident.

Mine overhang a little, maybe 30mm.

The passenger side one I cut an inch or so off the ends of the runners.

I also found using 2 of the original spacers on the front of the drivers seat made it just the right angle for comfort

Someone has sent me a message via Daihatsu-Drivers forum about smart car seats. Hope this helps Derek Wink

So to make a useful information collection I am posting stuff here from other pages from the forum to help bring the information together.

These are mine, which I bought off gumtree listed as "Smart Car Seats Red" - whatever that means?!

I have cut my seat belt guides off with an angle grinder... but first I covered the seat with some decent material to stop the grinder sparks melting the seat cover. I also only did a couple of seconds cutting, then let it cool, cut, cool, cut, cool... etc. It turns out that silver hammerite paint matches the backs pretty damn well for touching up.

Logi wrote:Seats back out today, carpets back in, it's surprisingly bloody noisy without them! Made a couple of mods, the recliner mod and the rearward travel mod.
Recliner mod involves cutting the stop off the seat therefore letting it recline, sorted. The rearward travel mod was more high tech. The base of the drivers seat(driver & passenger seats are completely different) dips down into the hollow on the engine cover. Trouble is when the seat goes back it hits the cover. Now spacing out the rails from the cover would work but the whole point was to have lower seats so i simply took my big hammer and lumped f**k out of the cover till it worked Smile

HighlyJetted wrote:Smartcar seats are a might fine match for the hijet, they are nice and low, the rails are a close match to the width of the originals and the passenger seat flips down for long loads. They are very comfy too, and offer good lower back support which is missing from the hijet seats. Plenty of padding under the bum and a proper metal under pan frame so they don't sag. Now I fully understand what logi said about the hammer trick on the drivers side engine cover. You have to beat a shaped bit out otherwise the rails won't slide right back. I'm well chuffed at these, the fitment is wonderful.

Logan..... cyclops cyclops cyclops cyclops

I can't help but notice your seatbelt guides are on the wrong side! But you've got the flip down seat on the passenger side.

This can only mean that your seat came out of a left hand drive Smart car.

Nothing more done yet; been living with it for a bit to see what I think. I also pick up the Jag that will become my daily next week, after which I can chop the Hijet about a bit more without compromising my ability to get to work! I was already considering taking the seat back out and moving it backward, and an attempt to tilt the engine cover proved that I have to; currently with the seat all the way back, the handle for sliding the seat hits the steering wheel! It's really too far forward for comfort as it is, so I''ll do that and throw the other one in as well, in the next couple of weeks. Comfort is indeed MUCH better, but I now wish I'd sprung the £90 for the toffee coloured leather ones that were on eBay the same week. Those and a woodrim wheel and wooden gearknob would have been a nice combo....

Is the thing that looks like a speaker in the backrests of the seats really a cupholder? How is that supposed to work?

I'm not buggering about with electrickery, nor does my HiJet need any extra ways of flattening the battery. I'm amazed the little battery has survived; I've flattened it 5 or 6 times by leaving the lights on!

So you fold the seat flat, and then put your cup in it? I guess they assume nobody needs coffee and company at the same time!

I haven't found a single cup that fits the cup holder, and the tea always pours out when you tilt the seat upright. Truly pointless.

I really like those seats so for me it's a "must have". Unfortunately grey seats are hard to get. The first ones I saw I was going for. On the picture in the ad they looked great but ...... they stored them outside so it got stained by the rain today.
I took the change for GBP 45.

Has anybody got experience gettin stains out of this fabric ??? Please let me know.

Yes, vanish carpet moose.

Comes in a spray can, spays on like foam, rub it in real hard, apply lots.

Then when it drys you hover out the dust.

Or you can use a wet carpet cleaner

They look good! Nice in that Grey colour.

Does the seat belt buckle fit into the smart car receivers OK?

Are you sure you trust the seat belt receivers being only part of the engine covers?

Once you go Smart car seats you realise how awfully uncomfortable the original seats really are!
